Socket 7 and ATI

Last week I tried putting a Radeon 32MB on a Tyan 1598 motherboard. It ran Mad Onions 3D2000 ok, but wouldn't run Winbench 99 graphics tests and 3DWinbench 99 would fail during the quality test. After upgrading to DX8a I tried the new DX8 drivers, during bootup I got a "Windows protection error". So before returning the video card I tried it on the Epox MPV3G5 with the same results. I figured maybe it was to much video card for the socket 7 platform so I tried a Xpert 128, same problems. The Xpert 128 uses the same multimedia accesories as the Xpert 98 that was on the system originally. Tried the ATI DVD player, locked up.
I have several versions of drivers for the Radeon and I tried those.
I tried the MVP3 drivers for the Xpert 128 from ATI's web site and any other rage 128 drivers I could get my hands on.
I know enough to remove the drivers and put the display back to standard VGA before installing new drivers.
I used version 29 of the VIA drivers.

Just for reference:
The MPV3G5 will run my ASUS 6600 Gforce SDR but the 1598 won't, so when the boards failed on the Tyan it didn't surprise me but when they failed on the Epox it did.

I'm trying to stay with ATI because it's the kid's computer and she uses the DVD more than she plays 3D games.

Any ideas?

Hmm, at least Rage128 should work with MVP3. Hell, I had Ati Rage Fury MAXX on my Aopen AX59Pro SS7 modo and it worked without any problems.

Contact your fellow Tyan users or your fellow users with windows protection problems.

Look around at Rage Underground for some help. Many ATi cards have problems with the MVP3 chipset, but they WILL work with the right drivers and such.

uh...strange....i had both radeon and xpert98 working fine with my duron and old K62 system withou any problem. i suggest if there may be any windows' files corrupt causeing the problem.

i had using dvd player on my old k62 system with xpert98 and radeon without any problem too.
just in case, did you install the VIA chipset driver and register
(as i know both win98se and winme won't identify and working MVP3 chipset correctly without installing via agp gart and chipset register files)
if answer is yes, there may be causing by "enable PCI to CPU buffer" in the bios.

Thanks for the responses and the links. I've already returned both cards so I think I'll go out this saturday and pick up another Xpert 128 and try this again. The performance increase from the Xpert 98 to the Xpert 128 is over twice as much(according to what benchmarks I could get to run). And since this may be the final video solution for this motherboard, I've got to do my best to get this to work.
