socket 754 or 939

Hi,

im just wondering if there is any difference between me buying

1. AMD Athlon 64 3200+ / 512KB Cache / 1600MHz FSB / Socket 754 / Processor

or

2. AMD Athlon 64 3200+ / 512KB Cache / 2000 MHz FSB / Socket 939 / Processor

They cost the same, they would perform similiar right? Is it just that one is on a different socket. Is one a better buy then the other in any way?

Socket 939 is the newer chipset. AMD is still releasing new 64bit chips that use socket 939 so that gives you an upgrade uption. Socket 754 upgrades stop at the 3700+ for 64 bit and AMD will only release budget Semprons for socket 754 in the future.

The socket 939 3200+ (which is 90nm as opposed to 130nm for the socket 754 version) consumes less power and is known to be a much better overclocker.

The dual channel memory option with socket 939 gives you a slight performance increase (less than 5%).

If the processor and motehrboard both cost the same then the socket 939 setup is by far the better buy.

The 754 CPUs are a lot cheaper for the same clockspeed.

Don't look at the <xxx>+ number alone. For most applications clockspeed is decisive once you have 512 KB cache and 400 MHz memory.

Get that 754 setup if you're budget strapped, but at the same price that cpu won't compete with the winchester.

If you want a 754 setup that will compete you have to get one of the cpu's with the 1mb L2 cache, that 512k one will get beaten up buy the same winchester with ondie memory controller.

the 939 has a far better memory bandwidth and the CPU marks are also higher.

increased memory means increased sample ability.
