socket 775 cpu compatibility question

Curious as I find myself upgrading older systems frequently to faster cpus because they are so cheap to buy on ebay, that I keep a small stock on hand at all times.

Depending on the day, sometimes the 800fsb core 2 duos are the better deal on ebay, and other days the 1066fsb cpus are found for cheaper. Obviously the 1066fsb's are preferred to purchase when found for less $$. Question I have is, is there any situation where a system does support the 800fsb core 2 duo cpus but not support the 1066fsb versions? I've not come across such a system yet myself.

Intel 945GC, 945PL, 946GC, 946GZ, and 946PL based boards don't support 1066 MHz for Core 2 Duo.

775 was a long enough lived socket that having the same physical pins is not a guarantee of compatibility. If you have a retail motherboard from ASUS, Gigabyte, or whomever, you can go to their website and out what CPUs are compatible and what the minimum BIOS revision is. OEM motherboards are a bit tougher, usually the only sure way is to figure out what processors were options on that particular board.

I do the same thing. I love the e2220 Intel Pentium Dual @ 2.40GHz. I can get those for around $5 on ebay and they benchmark right at the Intel Core2 Duo E4700 @ 2.60GHz which go for $25 which is the fastest 800fsb chip. That $20 makes a huge difference when you are trying to sell an entire PC for $100-$120 or when you are trying to price out an upgrade for someone.
