I was checking Pricewatch, and there seems to be two retailers who consistently have the lowest price on all memory. Edge Micro, and Coast to Coast. I think Coast to Coast uses the so-called "house brand", but Edge Micro claims: "All memory modules sold by Edge Micro are made by major manufacturers such as Micron, Samsung, Hyundai, NEC, LG, LD, Cyclone, USA, and more."

I am looking to buy 2 256mb sodimms, and their prices for two sticks are less than one stick at Crucial, or Mushkin, and they both offer lifetime warranty. Anyone ever dealt with these two places? and how was the product and experience? Thanks for the help.

Oh...and since this is a Hot Deals forum...I guess I should point out their "deal" which I think is pretty hot if they turn out to be reputable. 256mb Pc100 Sodimm, $34 and free insured shipping.

Back when PC100 was the "in" thing, I picked up a 128MB PC100 DIMM from Edge Micro that, well, failed miserably at PC100 (P5A, K6-2, 3x100Mhz). That left a sour taste in my mouth with their house modules. Unless you're getting an incredible buy like that on your SODIMMs, I think the premium you pay for Crucial and the like is money well spent. My $0.02 (which is a drop in the bucket compared to the ~$70 Edge wouldn't refund because of their "we test every module we ship so if it doesn't work for you, it's your problem" policy back then :|)

Make sure your laptop will work with those sodimms. Many of the cheaper sodimms use high density chips, so 256 meg stick is made from 8 chips instead of 16. Why does this matter? Many older chipsets including intel 815 chipset will not support high density sodimms. Only the newer 830 chipset from intel (and various via/sis/etc chipsets) will work with the high density chips.
Don't be suprised to find a BX chipset or 815 chipset in your "new" laptop. Those two chipsets are still pretty popular in the mobile space.

Thanks for all the help guys. I got a Senior, Gold, and a Platinum member to post and give advice! I'm kinda scared now...i might just stick to the pair of 128's in there now. I definitely don't wanna shell out the $150-200 it would take for me to go "quality"...and I sure as hell don't want to buy from a place that's gonna rip me off. Oh well...I guess I have more deal hunting to do.

Could you please post the deal if you find anything hot? I have been looking for a 512M 200-pin SODIMM deal for a while. Thanks ahead.

ymmv, but I've had real bad luck with coast to coast in the past. They also operate under 3-4 different names which should raise a redflag too

No. I want the prices we enjoyed up to November of last year when $27.00 would buy you a 256 MB stick of PC2100 DDR delivered to your door from Crucial. Oh well........

{"uh we can' t say why it has been disconnected,but uh go someplace else.."}
I had ordered 72 pin memory from them july 21 2002, a few days later i got an email...

Well, considering the fact that the OP asked about 256MB PC100 SODIMMs (not what you showed), and that Crucial has these for $90 (web discount price) vs the $34 quoted by the bottom feeder dealers - no, it's not. (Especially when Crucial is selling roughly comparable memory in DIMMs for $42 - not sure why the SODIMM form factor is commanding that much of a permium.)

I happen to be looking for the same sort of memory, and while I am willing to go more than the $34, Crucial's price seems excessive. FWIW, Mushkin is currently charging $80 for a similar SODIMM (admitted, not with free shipping) - still more than I am looking to pay...

Pricegrabber does list PNY 256mb pc100 sodimm for $45 which is a deal I already knew about...but there are flaws. First of all....it's from Tiger Direct, which I don't really mind but some people might. Secondly...it's "after a $15 mail in rebate" price. Third, they charge $10 for s&h. Fourth...they have the "limit one rebate per customer" thing, which would require you to ask someone else to buy a stick for you and ship to a different location and have them mail the rebate, but then also pay another $10 for s&h. The total for 2 sticks would be $115 after rebate, or $120 after only one rebate (which is probably better). I'm seriously considering Coast to Coast which doesn't seem too bad. About a 7.0 rating on reseller ratings, and only about $70 for two sticks on this memory. There's a disclaimer when you choose the cheap $5 s&h stating that it may take upto 30 DAYS?? The other method is $14 FedEx. Anyone that's dealt with them before....which method of shipping did you choose and how long did it take?

After the $0.99 deal falls through, check this out...Don't get the PC100. The PC133 should be downward compatible and there are 4 other places besides TigerDirect that have this memory for cheaper than the PC100....starting around $39. Shipping is still going to be about $10 but WTH...it's still a nice price and I doubt that PNY is going to stick you with reject/poor grade memory like those other places might.

PNY PC133 256mb SODIMM

Try this.

This item is not stocked or has been discontinued. Request this item from another seller.

So let me get this right. The pc133 sticks will work in my IBM Thinkpad T20 that currently uses pc100 and from everywhere that has a memory selector recommends pc100? pc133 sticks are definitely cheaper everywhere it seems.

The only difference would be that the PC133 has higher rated chips on the PCB so it should work just the same.
