well, there may be hope for it yet.

one of the guys on the sofpayback.com forum emailed one of the devs (or someone at Cauldron) and he replied back saying that they are reading forums and noting complaints and will address some stuff in a patch.

Here's the email:

Hi Bruce,

We are really sorry that you are disappointed with the game. We can assure you that closely watch reviews and comments on forums and that we will prepare an update of PC build with many improvements.

probably real, adding the ability to jump or lean would be a piece of cake, the issues are many, but most seem to be pretty simple sounding. If they patch it up I will buy it. I don't need a deep story, mindless shooting is okay with me, especially with the nice graphics and physics/violence level. It won't be as good as SOF: II ever, but no shooter has really been on that level to me since.

I think they're honest because it has problems running in Vista and there's already a patch, mind you the game's not even in 99% of stores yet. That's good response time from Activision.

been playing the SP for a bit. its not too bad. it's a bit simplistic and is a bit of mindless shooting. I started to have fun. I'm on the 2nd mission.


It installs under Activision Value, not Activision. Dunno what happened to Activision proper taking it over?

The options for modifying your guns are nice. seems like all of them can be modified somehow. They seem a bit week though. Definitely has a nice selection of guns.

MP kinda sucks. I played one server and everyone was friggin sniping. no fun there.

yeah, this isn't very good. This game doesn't even deserve the name Soldier of Fortune. I didn't even finish the first mission yet. I keep dying and I'm playing on normal difficulty.
The graphics are pretty decent (although I am seeing some flickering textures in the trees) and the weapons seem cool, but the gameplay is kinda blah.

the menus and gameplay definitely smell of console. ugh...you can tell this game was made for consoles and PC was just tacked on. You how in consoles you have to select letters and stuff to name your character? yeah, you gotta do it in the PC version also to name your MP character.

I didn't even try MP yet. i'm not sure i want to.

On what planet are the graphics even acceptable? I found them to be worse than I have ever seen for a DX9 game. The gameplay is purely laughing stock. No iron sights? This game sucks! In the trash it goes!

I agree completely, though if this is as good as SoF2 I would be incredibly surprised.

Well, while the SP was cool, it really wasn't much to write home about. But the MP is where it really shined. Best MP of any game I have ever played. Just the way the characters moved, the way the guns shot, how the damage was determined, the atmosphere just really made it a great MP game.

Hell, other than a guild in an MMO, SoF2 was the only game I ever joined a clan in.

LOL! They are pretty much standard on all modern combat games now (Battlefield 2 and Call of Duty 4 are prime examples).

Sorry, I guess you prefer the HL2 and UT type of fire from the hip crap.

Just because they're standard it doesn't mean a game can't be fun without them.

If that's your best/sole complaint again Payback's gameplay then your stance is rather weak.

No, my best complaint was the pathetic 3D engine graphics. Mind you that I was a die hard SoF2 fan and had high hopes for this, especially with the previews which obviously were lies.

I do expect iron sights on any modern warfare game. People like Fatal1ty can play those lame fire from the hip games. I don't enjoy any of them.

Help me? It's my opinion so I don't need "help". Have you played Payback yet? That game might have been fun 5-6 years ago maybe. The graphics are what really did it in for me.

what? grpahics are good. don't know what you're playing. you can use iron sights, but its not quite the same way as like Call of Duty. Its run and gun gameplay, guess every other FPS game in creation is pretty much laughing stock?

your complaints are laughing stock. what other game's graphics are you comparing it to? crysis?

i think everyone can agree that its not a great game, but its not because of the things you listed. i'm enjoying the single player. it's simple run and gun shoot em up.

You really can't compare the 2 games. One is just a run around and shoot off limbs type of game with a basic story moving it forward. The other has a little bit more of a storyline, but nothing to sell it except the name. At least in Soldier of Fortune the gimmick can sell it.

Storyline? I don't play COD4 for any storyline. I play it for the MP. I did the same for SOF2.

Unfortunately they used a nice video preview for the game to hype up all SOF fans. Anyone that buys the game will not see that at all. They will be quite disappointed.

I agree, his comment reminds me of the user reviews on IGN who say "game sucks, has worse graphics than an Nintendo 64 game. I find the graphics to be very good, I haven't played Crysis, but obviously this isn't even supposed to be close to a Crysis killer graphically. The explosions from Grenades look sweeeet if you ask me. animation's are pretty good, water looks nice too. It has a weird effect when you reload where it sort of gets fuzzy for a second, doesn't make any sense to me. But it does add to the challenge a bit.

game is HARD, A.I. is pretty mindless overall, but they seem to have COD 1 levels of detecting you. I can be crouching in the bushes crawling and they seem to see me the second I'm in range.

and to the guy who compared it to COD4, COD4 is the top game out right now graphically that's an unfair comparson, compare any game to COD4 and it looks bad. SOF: Payback holds it's own graphically, I love the animation and COD4 can't touch SOF on the violence. I shot a dudes leg clean off and he was crawling on the ground still shooting at me, sweet

We are in the generation of DX10 technology are we not?

This game is not hard. Play OFP, that will give you hard.

I compare it to COD4 because it's the same price and was released around the same time. If you are going to do that then you are directly compared to your competition.

Given the video previews of the game I was expecting so much more and was temporarily thrilled to have another modern combat game to play.

no one said it wasn't flawed. in fact, i even said it was. everyone is diappointed with it, but to totally write it off is just dumb.

i don't have vista, so i don't have dx10, so i don't care. i bet there are more xp machines out there than vista, anyway.

it was actually $10 less than CoD4

DX10 is hype for now any ways, current titles are DX10 ready don't seem to do anything over the DX9. SOF has above average graphics, some parts I'd even say very nice. Graphics don't make a game, if they did I would have bought Jherico.

I meant hard like enemies have unrealistic abilities to spot you instantly, OFP is hard in a realistic manner. SOF baddies seem to know you're coming, always. That's one thing I really don't like about the game.

COD:4 is 50 bucks, SOF: Payback is $40. I don't in any way feel "ripped off" having bought SOF Payback, it's a mindless shooter, that's exactly what I wanted. The gore pushes it over the top for me, yes I'd rather play it then COD:4, regardless of graphics and story I find most shooters the same, SOF stands out due to the limbs flying off and blood spurting everywhere.

I watched the videos and I thought "looks neat, but won't touch SOF II" It doesn't, I wish it was better than it is, but it is better than most users accounts

IE: worst game ever...
DX9 looks worse than a 8 bit Nintendo game...
no iron cross hairs make it the worst game I've ever played


it's DECENT, I'm actually enjoying it somewhat, so far I like it enough to maybe even finish it. I played the COD4 demo, it was good graphics I didn't see shit else *shrug*
