Software firewall questions?

I currently am connected via DSL through SBC. The modem that is being used is a 2wire home gateway. It has a built in firewall. using this gateway is also how I have my two computers networked. Based on what I have read, it is a good idea to add a software firewall to this setup.

However, I have a router on order with a firewall in it as well (D-Link 624). With that firewall and the firewall in the modem do I still need a software firewall? Many moons ago I used to use Zonealarm, but I have read several people stating they are having problems with ZoneAlarm and their broadband connection. So, I am leaning away from them if I decide to install a software firewall.

If it makes a difference I am running NAV on both computers.

Do I need a software firewall? If so, os there one that is easier to use with networks and less likely to cause big problems?

If you only want to keep the bad guys on the outside from getting in, you are fine. However, if you want program by program control (ie keeping bad guys (spyware) already on the inside from getting out), you need a software firewall.

Do I need a software firewall?

No. The home gateway thing might be enough (I'm not familiar with those setups), but if you add in the dlink router you should be good to go.

Good point, but if you scan your machines on a regular basis for spyware, you should be fine. Also depends on if you have other people using your computer. IF you have kids, teenagers, etc. That might be an issue to worry about...

thanks for the info. I have read that zone alarm has caused some problems with peoples connections and really want to avoid those types of problems. Is there one of the other free programs that really shines and seems to cause fewer conflicts or problems?

You should try ZoneAlarm but you need not worry about other people who have a problem with it you system is differ from other people so give it a try and you owe me!
