Software like notepad++ (encrypted text)

I have way too many passwords and accounts to keep track of, so I keep all of that information in an encrypted text file. For the last few years, I've been using Notepad++ with the SecurePad plugin. It's probably not the safest form of encryption, but I like that it was a very quick loading application and that it doubled as a pretty full-featured text editor.

Anyway, I've been using Parallels to boot a Win7 VM to run Notepad++ and Onenote, but I've been using Onenote less and less. I've come to realize that the only program tying up 10 GB on my SSD is Notepad++.

I've been googling for replacements and nothing really quite fits the bill. I don't want a dedicated password manager like keepass. I guess what I want is just a text editor with a reasonably difficult encryption tool.

Then you can use any Text editor to edit the file and have an AppleScript set to lock the image (if you want to get super nerdy with it) every 60 min or so.

TrueCrypt is good. From what I know of TrueCrypt you'd have to encrypt a volume with your text editor inside (maybe you can encrypt just the file itself?), but the volume can be something like a few megabytes or so. Nothing big.

Create user/password combos as needed?

You can also store simple notes as well.

Sure, it's not a separate full-featured text editor, but it's at least an alternative.

Thanks for the tip about an encrypted disk image. I tried using secure notes a while ago but the formatting of a secure note is what got me. My password file is set up so that everything looked lined up in Notepad/Notepad++ with word wrap off. Secure notes have a fixed "page" width, so I couldn't use them without fixing a lot of entries. The disk image is one more step than I would like, but I kind of like the idea that I can put more than my password file in the image. I'm not sure that I'll ever end up doing that, but it's good to know that I can. I'll probably stick with this method until I start cleaning up my data so that I can use keychain access, but for now, I can move my Win7 VM off of my SSD and free up about 9 GB of space on my 80 GB X18-M G2.

Why not use KeePassX? It's cross platform.

Yep, I use this and I store the file on Dropbox. It's worked well so far.
