Software Pirating. . .your take

Lately at the Lan parties I've been attending there has been RAMPANT copying of games and I'm concerned. How do these people justify stealing these games? How do they expect the game companies to stay in business? I get quite angry when people come up to me and ask if they can "borrow" a game so they can copy it. Just go buy the damn thing. I'm in college and don't have a lot of money. . .but I still BUY my games. I hate the excuse of not having enough money. The people who made the game deserve the money that they get. I honestly hope that they find SOME way to combat pirating.

What is your take on pirating? If you pirate the games (or lend them to be pirated) how do you justify your actions? Do you belive it is "stealing". . .and if you don't supply the reasons behind your thinking. I just want to see how many people actually think its "ok" to copy games w/o owning a legit copy first. All comments welcomed and wanted.

Thanks for the input.

I copy everything.. if I like it alot/use it alot, I BUY IT.. it's the whole theory behind MP3's (the theory people want to believe you believe in)

pirating for me, is a test phase.

$50 for a game that could suck, or even if it's good only have 10h worth of play in it, with no posibility of return haha no

You make a good game I will buy it for the multiplayer key after I try it out

well basically i dont have alot of money.

yes, if i really wanted i'm sure i could save enough money to buy the stuff but i dont.

call me a thief, the truth is, i just dont give a crap. i dont do it to evaluate, i do it because i just dont care. i have NEVER bought software, except nero which came w/ my cd burner.

truth is, alot of software owes its popularity to piracy. look at all the people using photoshop, its 600 bucks, how many people actually pay for it? ( i know some do, but ALOT dont)

call me a thief, or whatever, i really dont give a crap, and i know alot of people are the same way but just don't say it here at AT cus people will flame the hell out of them.

flame on

<< and I'm concerned >>

oh come on, you aren't concerned......... so the guys who made it can only buy 3 houses, 1 ferrari and 1 porsche instead of 5 houses, 1 ferrari, 1 lambghorini, and 1 porsche.... give me a break

pirating itself is bad.... but when used like mp3s i see nothing wrong with it

I just don't care. If I want a cd, a movie, or a piece of software, and I have an oppertunity to get it, i might . It may be considered stealing to you, but I just don't care.

But back on this topic: I think copying games is pretty low. But programs like Photoshop, where the cost is prohibitive or ludicrious, I really don't feel too bad about. Even most freelance graphic designers don't have a legal copy of photoshop because it's so expensive.

Then, just like all pirates, you are a CRIMINAL.

People like you who violate intellectual/creative copyrights make me sick. Whether it's an artist's music, a company's software, or somebody's product design, stealing from them by violating their copyrights is not only illegal but immoral.

Of course, most people like you who argue that it is OK to do so have probably never invented, created, or designed anything of worth in your entire lives. As well you have no appreciation for the fact that in most cases it takes millions or billions of dollars in R&D, etc., to bring products to market, and that in the end, denying a person or company the ability to recoup their investment and any resulting profits ultimately leads to less R&D and innovation.

And if by chance you do happen to someday create/invent/design something of value, my sincerest hope is that it gets pirated en masse, so that YOU too will be denied your rightful copyright protection.

BCompDude,

You mention that you "buy" all your games...what about your OS? Or Office applications? Do you buy all of those, too?

I also hate how game previews allways go on about how good the game is looking and plays, guess they have hookers and booze when the reviewers go over to the studio

Then when the game comes out they say it sucks

the ones against piracy, i have one thing to ask:

How many mp3s do you have on your comp that you don't own the legal copy of the cd of?

Obviously then you cannot read. Buying a CD does not grant you the right to distribute the music contained therein. Period ! And while some idiots attempt to justify this behavior by arguing that artists make big $'s off their sales, that applies only to those who have large sales numbers and/or have favorable contracts with their record label. For the smaller artists and indies, pirating has a crippling effect on them.

46. I got those from the artist's websites and mp3.com, all legally.

I dont really play games, but the few that I do play occasionally, I bought.

I don't think he meant it the way you are thinking. I think he means that if people DL or recieves mp3s through whatever way, and THEN buy it, then it is good.
