So i got an old desktop that I know is running an amd athlon xp cpu. I am unsure of what it is though. I have tried programs like cpu-z but basically the programs changes it's thought based upon what the clock and fsb is. So far i've gotten cpu-z to read it as an 1700, a 2000 and a 3000. I really don't want to have to rip off the heatsink and reapply thermal. Is there a reliable software method?

At least it narrows it down, you could always check the bios load, should tell you cpu speed, fsb and cache if not the actual processor name and number. Just hit pause so you can read it more easily...

Or get the info and cross reference to find out the cpu.

Umm, I guess I did. BKLounger, you still want to use CPU-Z, I promise. You'll just want to download Version 1.2, or earlier. Good luck.

i've been trying with the bios. So far all i really know is that it is a barton chip (this stays the same in cpu-z). But depending on what i change the freq to is what changes how cpu-z see's the model. But i have been using the newest version of cpu-z so i'll grab an old versio as well as everest. I am pretty sure it is one of the 333mhz fsb chips since the motherboard I have is not capable of 400mhz. So i'm down to about a half dozen chips of what it could be.,

CMOS reset.

Set optimized default on your bios.

Then see what it says.

That will be the correct display.

ok i tried everest and it would change it's mind depending on what i changed the clockrate to. Same with windows but the funny thing i found is there is a hardware option on the motherboard to change the multiplier but no matter what hardware setting i change it to it is locked into 13x in the bios. So by reference http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L...lon_XP_microprocessors

the only 13x multiplier cpu for the barton core is the 3000+ plus i've run the machine for a while and the cpu temp stay relatively low so it's not like i overclocked the hell out of some low end barton especially since it looks like the machine is still using the stock heatsink / fan.

Thanks for all the help though everyone.
