Hi All,

I was thinking about using solaris in stead of linux. Basically because I think it's better than linux and I would keep windows.
Does anyone here have experience with solaris and what are your feelings on this OS.
_I_ personally really like it works out-of-the-box and it doesn't cost anything either.

I will use it on an x86 system, so no SPARC coz I still wanna use windows.
I am still building my system, but it will probably look something like this:
- AMD Thunderbird
- Some VIA mobo
- Creative Labs Soundcart
- Matrox G400/800
- IIyama 19inch
- 20 gig HD
- Logitech Mouse (does scrolling work?)
- Zipdrive (internal+external)

Ah ha.. well better go look up some solaris hardware support list.

First off i don't think the SBlive will work. Althought it works prefectly fine in linux with multistream and such.

The G400 i don't know if it'll work. The GLX drivers are for linux i think.

VIA motherboard.. umm another question mark there..

Scrolling? Maybe if it's a X only thing. But wait.. doesn't Solaris use it's own X servers?

Zip no idea about that one.

Solaris on x86 = bad bad bad. It's not meant to run on x86 architecture and it complains a LOT, not to mention being slower than molasses...

I'd have to agree with the others. I've used both (though I used Solaris on SPARC machines) and Linux would definately be my choice. Even though it's completely free it seems to have a more polished feel. If you really want a true Unix, go with FreeBSD. I personally use linux because of the wider user base but FreeBSD is nice too, though driver support isn't quite as good (both GREAT OS's to program in).

I wouldn't go as far as to call Solaris x86 _BAD_, but it has much more limited hardware support. Also, Linux has a ton more ready-to-run apps, where you can just install RPM's... Also, you'll probably have much better luck getting support on the 'net due to the fact that a LOT more people run linux than run Solaris x86.
