Truth be told The Dell 4550 with a P4 2.4Ghz, a real video
card, the same size hard drive, more memory, and
WinXP crap, er, home, for around $400 shipped and taxed (after
rebates) is
actually IMHO a much better deal.

Not that the 4550 is available for that today. But it has been
recently and may well be again...

If you know how to build your own computer, I would advise against buying this Gateway. One, you are getting refurbished goods. Two, it's a gateway. Three, your market price on new hardware is close to this price after rebate.

despite what other people say, I still think this is a *flaming hot deal* !!! there are no rebates, and its incredibly cheap for a system.

if you're looking to build your own and have top of the line, then this really isn't for you. you'd have to add a pci video card for games, but of course this is a *server* and not meant for games. what do u expect for $230 and no assembly?

if you want to get your kid something for school... this is it. its cheap, it works, and they also won't waste their time gaming

Pretty good deal on the SERVER. But I think that dell poweredge 500sc deal a little while ago was hotter (1.2celeron, 2 80gigs, ~$325).
Dont forget these are servers built for stability. No need to compare these to desktops with p4 2.4s, agp, etc. They aren't used for the same purposes.

This is not a gaming rig it's a server.

For what it is the price is awesome.

Build me a system with new parts that includes two 64 bit PCI slots for $230.

Actually I would be delighted if you could. I sure can't

Last I checked it's impossible to buy a serverworks 1 cpu board so you are stuck with 2 CPU MBs if you want the 64 Bit PCI.

So you are starting at $200 or so for the MB alone before getting CPU or anything else.

If you are looking for a server with decent IO (Applications include Gig ethernet, LVD 160+ SCSI) you are looking at a steal for $230.
