I'm surprised that this is still alive. I thought about posting about 5:00am this morning but thought it would be out quickly. Can't believe it's still alive, especially with all of the interest from SD and FW.

Even though it's listed as New, the confirmation e-mail lists it as tested working. FYI.

Once you have DD-WRT installed, you can then install Tomato or other flashes.

Installing DD-WRT on this router.

This router has 8MB flash and 32MB of ram. Double of most routers. Extra ram really helps with high connection torrents!

Ah what the heck. I bought my fifth router as well. Too good of a deal to let it pass.

Darn you guys! I almost resisted, but Engineer's and Zoiks' capitulation weakened my resolve.

CowBoom charged me $1.44 in tax, making my order total $19.43.

I bought one as well and I won't even need a router for at least 6 months. Can't beat DD-WRT + this router for a cheap/effective combo though.

How is the router as-is....w/o the DD-WRT stuff I don't understand??

Good deal. If I didn't have enough routers, I would get it. I already have 3 routers(in 3 locations) running DD-WRT. 1 Linksys and 2 buffalos.

From previous deals, I've heard that it was OK. It doesn't have (IIRC) anything like bridge mode and I don't think it has QOS (at least advanced QOS). A few people actually said it worked OK though.

I'm not sure about update firmwares though. You cannot place a stock WRT54GS (for example) firmware on this that I know of. Possibly by TFTP'ing it over the router, but that's something that would need to be played with to see.

How is the router as-is, for normal networking? No updates??

It might work outside of the box but you will have more control and configuration settings using the dd-wrt firmware. Dd-wrt allows you to control a router similar to what you can do with much more expensive hardware.
It's not really hard to update the new firmware. Just follow the instructions in the link that Engineer provided. My old linksys wrt54g would not work properly by bridging it to a different subnet in my home network. I had to update it with dd-wrt to make it work.

The problem is that nobody bought this to use as-is. They all update it with DD-WRT or Tomato!

Thanks guys. Since I didn't really need it anyhow, I will try dd-wrt and/or tomato. If I brick it, I'm only out $19 and change!

As long as you don't have a power outage while you do the flash you'll be fine.

I have one running DD-WRT in wireless bridge repeater (i.e., wirless range extender) mode. It does an excellent job re-amplifying wireless signals, it never drops the connection. Plus, it will run in the same domain as your home network, so anything running off the extended, wireless network sees everything else in the network (e.g., the same domain limitations of Vista and WinXP are met).

I had one of these running as an Xbox wireless adapter. Kind of a bitch to set up, but worked pretty well. They way I had it set up was on a different subnet than my normal network. Is there an easier way to set it up?
