Sold RX480, will a 1050ti hold me over?

Ok, so I cashed in on the mining craze, how can I resist selling a used $240 card for $400? I have been wanting to switch over to Nvidia for CUDA anyways in the Adobe suite (seems to be better support for CUDA than Open CL). I have a 4k desktop and don't really game other than the occasionally BF4 sessionl (1080p looks fine scaled up to me). From what I have seen, it looks like a 1050ti is not horrible, and is the least overpriced remaining card out there ($120 right now). I will likely upgrade again in a year or so, and put this card in an HTPC for 4k netflix. Any gotchas with my thinking, or go for it? The HD3000 on my 2600k isn't going to cut it!

fine card for 1080P with decent settings (not "ultra").
I don't see why not, the price you mentioned is very reasonable,

HD 3000 is worthless, even a GT 710 would be a huge upgrade.

If you don't game then that card will be enough. Its way slower than the RX 480, easily up to 60% slower, but it will get the job done at 1080p in medium settings in most games.

You could get a 1060 to be around the same level as a RX480/580.
Or look out for a good deal on a 1070 (there was a B&M deal on the Zotac Amp! 1070 for ~$280 a little while back).

Did the same thing as you - dumped my 290s and 390s for obscene sums, and switched to 1080s.

1050 ti totally is a gaming card, not sure about your first line, the 480 is certainly a lot faster, but that doesn't translate IMO into a vastly different experience at 1080P if you use adequate settings for both in most games.

The 1050Ti is a really solid performer, runs really cool, and uses minimal power. Someone posted an article yesterday showing it being nearly as fast as a GTX 780 in older and modern games. It even came within spitting distance of my GTX 970 in a couple games. My only suggestion is that if you can find a low profile 1050Ti for the same price, you'll be able to reuse it in an smaller ITX or SFF system later on. It might also hold its value longer if you go to sell it later as low profile cards usually hold a premium over standard.

Thanks for all the replies, got a single fan EVGA 1050 ti SC Gaming. Had I seen nathanddrews post, I would have purchased the low profile version for future HTPC needs. Oh well. I ran a quick BF4 match at 1440p and high settings and it was good enough for me. I don't have a critical eye, or freesync monitors or any of that stuff, so I don't have a good comparison. But it seems fine to me!

This mining craze is really nuts, a few months ago the 480 was going for what, ~$200 something?
I remember reading a quote/saying or something a while back, that the only people who made money from the ol' west gold rush were the ones selling the shovels.

Not entirely true in this case, but it 'aint wrong either. If I had a x70/x80 right now, I'd dump it and buy a 1080ti. Then mine on that.

If I cashed in an RX 480 for $400 I'd grab a nice GTX 1070. Pretty substantial upgrade for free.
