Like 99% of the auctions I bid on state they will cancel bids with 0 feedback. I believe you have the ability to cancel bids before the auction ends, so you'd have to keep up with it.

yeah you do have the ability, and you can block users as well. that is how i do it. but it doesn't help at all when you have multiple people watching your item and sniping it at the end.

Which is what just happened to Ichinisan and me.

they could easily allow an option that lets the user set up a minimum number of feedback required before you can bid on an item. or at least make it so that if they have 0 feedback or are registered in the past 30 days (whatever makes that stupid icon show up showing you as a "new user") that you cannot bid until you are authorized by the seller.

that would solve about 99.99% of the problems dealing with non paying bidders.

I'm pretty sure I've seen just such an option when setting up an auction.

the last thing i tried to sell on ebay was a ps4 at launch. i was going to keep it but i won one from taco bell so i figured i'd try to sell it.

last second, a 0 feedback bidder that registered that day was the high bidder and ended that way. i knew i'd never see the money. no communication or anything.

and since there was a very short window to make any money off of them, i just returned it to amazon.

Setting up buyer requirements

You can specify buyer requirements to manage the types of buyers who can bid on or buy your items. You set up buyer requirements for your listings, you reduce the number of buyers who might make sales a challenge, but you also reduce the number of potential bidders and buyers for your items.

You can specify buyer requirements for all your listings, or you can specify the requirements only for particular listings.

To add buyer requirements to all of your listings:
  1. Go to My eBay > Account > Site preferences.
  2. In the Buyer requirements section, click Show, and then click Edit.
  3. On the Buyer Requirements page, select your buyer requirements. For example, you might not want to do business with buyers who:
    Don't have a PayPal account
Have unpaid items recorded on their account
Are registered in countries you don't ship to
    Have reportedly violated eBay policies
    Have a negative Feedback score
Are currently winning or have bought a large number of your items in the last 10 days
  4. If you want to apply these settings to all current and future listings, select the Apply above settings to current and future listings check box.
  5. If you want to prevent blocked buyers from sending you questions about your listings, select the Do not allow blocked buyers to contact me check box. Remember, you also need to add the buyers to your blocked list.
  6. Click Submit to save your requirements.
To add buyer requirements for a specific listing, specify your requirements in the listing form.

The problem is, you're limiting bidders. Lots of 0-feedback bidders help to push the price up. They are often too inexperienced to snipe successfully, so they don't win anyway. Restricting them means they can't even compete...so your final price might not be pushed as high.

When selling something rare / collectible, it seems to attract certain people to register for eBay just so they can try to get it.

I know you can cancel bids after an auction has finished, as I've been outbid and then won the auction anyway.

you can do the '2nd chance bidder', which i did. but that doesn't mean the 2nd person 'won' the auction. they have 24 hours to accept or decline it. i've never once had a 2nd chance offer accept it.

I've actually won an auction, despite it ending with me not being the highest bidder. After it ended, the seller (or buyer, idk) canceled or retracted the winning bid and it defaulted to me. It also didn't notify me I had won, so when I checked like 8 or so hours later, the seller was upset I hadn't paid within seconds... Like the auction ended at 4AM, get over it bro. He actually had sent a cancellation request by that time, so I just accepted that.

Nothing to do but open a ticket and wait to close it... Ebay is horrible, can't see how people can use them. I have been burned way too many times.

Ebay is ESPECIALLY horrible for sellers. Buyers have it good. Ebay is alienating the very people who have made them successful.

everyone starts with 0 feedback so I think it's unfair to label 0 feedback people as non-paying.
Just set the item to buy it now with immediate payment required.

Setting everything to Buy it now is pointless. I want to use the auction function for a reason. Sure, I could put these Yeezy 3s up for a Buy It Now, but I'd lose out on the morons who have that "need to win" mentality and bid it above what I expect to get for them.

And, it would be no problem if someone had 0 feedback and actually messaged me they would like to bid. But, I also require buyers give me their phone number so we can talk on the phone before I will ship anything.

eBay is only really interested in the Big $$ sellers.

They now and for a long time take a cut of what you charge for shipping. So if you charge actual cost to the buyer you lose money.

Really though...eBay prefers the sellers eat the entire cost of S&H.

As Ichinisan pointed out there is a system to stop it - you can block non-paying bidders. However it only works if sellers actually report non paying bidders. Don't blame the ebay when it's the sellers community that won't report non paying bidders to ebay.

If you sell as a fixed price listing, you can require immediate payment.

I've had a "buyer" somehow get around that. Still no idea how he did it. I had a "buy it now" listing, and somehow the guy managed to "buy" my hard drive without paying, Instead I got a request for an invoice which I do not understand as to why or how since it was a fixed price with free shipping, no need for invoice. I sent an invoice just for funsies, but then ended up having to relist the item anyway since the guy never paid.

that feature is 100% useless because people who signed up to ebay 5 minutes before ruining your auction aren't non paying bidders.

I believe I banned 0-feedback users from bidding on my stuff. While they're not all bad, I just don't want to deal with them. Then you also get the people that private message you, and try to get you to sell them an item outside of eBay, which is against eBay's ToS. Then you also get the super lowball offers... and I mean the ones that are just offensive. I was selling an EVGA 780 Hydrocopper (comes with a water block from the factory), and some guy offered me $80 saying that he could buy them for about $75 and that made his offer good. I just laughed, told him to "Buy one of those instead", and denied the offer.

I've had a few issues with ebay, both selling and buying. Sold a HD7770 which was in new condition (only taken out of the box to test) and the buyer emailed me telling me it didnt work. I don't accept returns but was so sure the card worked I just got him to send it back. Didnt need the hassle. And that card worked perfectly of course so I just sold it again. But I almost gave up on the whole eBay thing when I bought some ram for over £80, never recieved it, the seller provided some BS delivery nonsense and got away with it. I send some very colourful emails to ebay about it, didnt help but at least it got rid of some anger.

I was selling a new, sealed copy of "Conker's Bad Fur Day" (N64) recently. Within a minute or two of listing the auction with starting price of $0.01, already with dozens of bids, a jugalo(tm) marijuana enthusiast offered $50 via the messaging system. It was funny and I knew exactly what he was doing, but I cordially declined. The bare cartridge goes for WAY more than that. Before I could even respond to his question (less than 1 minute), the bids were already well above what he was offering...with 1 week to go. Ultimately, it sold for over $260.
