Well, I'm not exactly sure that this belongs here but...
anyone know about how many watts a soldering iron should be to solder SMD components onto PCBs? also, what temperature solder should I use? will 500F work, or would that melt right through?
NASA soldering school used to say 3-5seconds. Good temperature controlled irons can be had for a reasonable price. I use a 60watt iron that has tips you replace for different size, shape, and temp. I usually wind up around 600deg. A good source for technician tools is www.jensentools.com.
