Just to add some interesting history and continue this thread......

My father served in the USMC in the Korean War as a grunt foot soldier. I discussed this thread with him and he said that in Korea they just had flack vests, and never enough to go around. When guys went on patrol the other guys would loan them their flack vests. I'm not sure what the technology of those vests were or how effective they were - anyone know?

I wonder how prevelant body armor was in Vietnam?

same thing basically. flack jackets. designed to protect against grenades/ light explosives but if someone tried shooting you with even a pistol round, it's worthless.
