Since I just tracked a lot of traffic to my site from this thread, I thought I'd come back and update my review again, since it seems people are still stopping by to read this.

I had a few hiccups with HostPC in the middle, and I think their helpdesk support has gotten a little worse as they've grown larger. We had a few misunderstandings as well.

However, on the whole, I think they're a great place to go for hosting for 99% of the people reading this thread. I'd say their attitude is sometimes to offer me a refund if I want to leave rather than try to solve my problems or look into them, but this is only in the case of repeating, high-level problems that aren't easy to troubleshoot, many of them due to factors beyond HostPC's control (DirectAdmin screwups, for example). Keep in mind, I've got a ton of sites at HostPC, and I'm planning to keep most of them there...in all likelihood, this is the only hosting company you'll need till you upgrade to dedicated. My hiccups with HostPC may have been due to my getting close to the upgrade point as much as to their growing pains.

All in all, I'd recommend them to anyone who needs something less than dedicated hosting. I haven't used their dedicated hosting, so I can't comment on that. For shared, the price / quality level / support / features can't be beat, even if you don't get in on a sale.

Original review follows:

---------------------------

This company was recommended to me by Rossman a few years ago, and I've had nothing but great experiences with them ever since: HostPC

Current pricing: $35 per year for

# 1 GB disk space
# 10000 MB data transfer/month
# 50 POP3/IMAP Mail Accounts
# 6 Add On Domains

Right now, they have a 2 for 1 promotion (they have several of these throughout the year) where you get double quotas on bandwidth and disk space for the same price, so double the values I listed above (not sure if this applies to add on domains / email). 30 day money back guarantee if you don't like it.

Pricing is very, very hard to beat, but their service levels and attention to clients is first-class...better than I've had with much higher-priced hosts. It's also relatively easy to talk to Joe, the owner of the company, so escalation's never been a problem...usually their helpdesk gets Joe or a higher-level tech to answer questions that they can't handle, so I've never once had to ask for escalation. If you've dealt with budget hosting companies before, you'll know that this is somewhat rare.

Click here for my full HostPC Review It basically outlines my experiences with HostPC over the past couple of years, during which I've hosted several sites with them (including the one that review is posted to) and recommended them to several satisfied clients. They advertise only through word-of-mouth, so pretty much all of their clients are satisfied customers who know other satisfied customers.

Hope this helps...if you're a small business or nonprofit looking for hosting, HostPC's a great place to start.

This is a very hot deal and pretty rare, they only have sales 1-2 times a year.

Here is a direct link to the 2 for 1 offer.

I've been mostly satisfied with them as well.

My biggest complaint is has to do with the fact I have been using their online site designer. They keep having to switch outside providers for the software.

No?...

phpBB Forums - Due to numerous security issues with this software, phpBB (phpbb.com) software is forbidden on HostPC servers at any time (this includes,
but is not limited to, Add-On modules of phpBB to Nuke or PostNuke software).

I'll pass

Schmide - sometimes the needs of the many (trouble free hosting) supercede the needs of the few or the one.

I've been a customer of HostPC for several years, they are very good at protecting us from people using easily hacked software and scripts.

phpBB is just one example, people would install it - but not keep it current. This put the rest of us on the same server at risk.

I refer all of my friends to HostPC.

Although lack of phpbb leaves out the possibility of a forum, this is very cheap and may be ok for me for now. Thanks for the link.

Dude software has bugs. They get fixed. The risk from the xss issue would only affect the site it was running on. It could not escalate to a full server compromise. Linux and windows machines have just as many if not more vulnerabilities (SSL anyone) they get pached and life goes on. For me its a dealbreaker. I considered the deal but that killed it. Its good information for people reading the thread.

Schmide - Not really a crap, just showing your ignorance and willingness to use instable software. I for one welcome a company that doesn't allow phpNuke or phpBB as their coding is about as ****** as it can get. That just means the stability and security is increased for other users.

You know there are other, dare I say better free forum applications available.

Forum software directory, worth a bookmark:
http://www.foruminsider.com/index.php?act=directory

So far I have been impressed with MyBB which I am using on PresarioTalk.com (under development). It's free, doesn't look ugly and takes about 10 minutes to install:

1) Download
2) Uncompress (I used WinRAR)
3) Upload via FTP
4) CHMOD 2 files and 2 directories
5) Login to DirectAdmin or cPanel and create a database
6) Run the install entering in the db info
7) Click next next next, delete install directory and you're done!

If anyone wants I'd be more than happy to install MyBB on your web site for free. Just PM or call me at 503-608-7680 (which is also in my sig).

PS MyBB has had some security fixes as well. Guess we should throw that on the trash heap too.

phpBB: I had a totally up-to-date, patched installation that was compromised *twice*. Some code is better than others. And I didn't have much trouble trying out other forums packages, and the CMS I'm using now (Drupal / CivicSpace) for a lot of my sites can do forums built-in.

If you've got to have phpBB, then HostPC's not for you, but I'd question such steadfast loyalty to one package. There are security vulnerabilities in phpBB that are simply not being addressed, and the sheer number of recent exploits would suggest that there are serious flaws in the coding. Windows and Linux both have bugs, but that doesn't mean once can't be more stable than the other. Similarly, all forums packages may have bugs, but there may still be some that are clearly better / worse than the rest.

HostPC's pricing isn't the only reason they're to be recommended...read my review. It's the service / support they offer, and the quality of the product. I'm sure you can find other cheap hosting deals that will match this (or beat it), but that's comparing apples with oranges...budget hosts are a dime a dozen, but a budget, <strong>quality</strong> host is rare.

Been with HostPC for a year or two now. Been several "backup and replacements" during this time. Out of the last year and half there have only really been 4 or 5 totally blackout days where there was major problems with the server(s).

Don't know if this is normal or not, but other than that, they have been good to deal with.

Thanks, Rossman...I've gotten over 20 views of that review from this thread in the past few hours, so another link can't hurt. Time to put some adwords on my site and cash in...

Joe and the rest of the folks at HostPC have been good to me. All thanks to Rossman who originally referred me.

Service has been great, and the price can't be beat.

Here's another endorsement for HostPC.

The big huricane outage was a pain, since everything was down for like 2 days, but once Joe got into proactive mode things got better with options for mirroring and offsite backups. I've been with them for over three years and still recommend them to my friends.
