the 3-year free 1&1 accounts are beginning to expire... so the timing on this is great!
(1&1 sucks, btw... and 'free' is almost too much of a cost...)

I've set my dad up with hostpc a while back and have a good opinion of it as well -- so i'll be moving over to it.
Only annoying thing for me is how daily stats are set-up... It seems impossible to get any historical value from it -- unless I'm missing something???

*tips on getting value from the statistics are welcome via PM....

if you have 3+ friends that wants to do web hosting, it might be cheaper and better to go with dreamhost.

here's a direct comparison:

HostPC ($35/yr) vs DreamHost ($120/yr or $96/yr if you pay 2 years in advance)
* already includes the double rate

Disk Space: 2GB vs 20GB (10x difference)
Data Transfer/Month: 20GB vs 1TB (5x difference)
POP3/IMAP Mail Accounts: 50 vs 3000 (600x difference)
Add On Domains: 6 vs unlimited (can't even calculate here)

I've just used DreamHost for over a year and have been very satisfied. You can look at what other stuff they offer.
http://www.dreamhost.com/shared/comparison.html

What's interesting is that your space and bandwidth increases weekly and doesn't stay stagnant at one place. You can read about that on my blog:
http://www.krunk4ever.com/blog/?p=261

They've also got a bunch of deals and if you can't find a code, you can PM me.

I'm not one to be able to recommend HostPC, but you have to understand the concept of overselling and why it's not exactly a positive thing. Just think about how realistic the prices of DreamHost are.

But isn't there always a downside to such great deals? That being the overloaded servers and resulting problems as everyone rushes to sign on?

So these guys don't include a domain? Is there a good place to go to get a domain?

You can buy your domain through HostPC, if you want. I prefer buying mine directly from GoDaddy, so I have full control of the domain names. I had a website hosting company before that held my domain names hostage when I wanted to move domains, so even though I trust HostPC, I still prefer handling registrations on my own. It's fairly simple, and figuring out how to point your nameservers to the right place isn't rocket science.

Nothing against HostPC but I always recommend registering a domain directly from a domain registrar such as NameCheap.com

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=38&threadid=1777714

BTW - The site in your sig, mechBgon.com was originally registered by me as a gift to mechBgon. Naturally the domain registrar I used was NameCheap.com and I'm hosting it for FREE with my SonataWeb.net cPanel resellers account. They begin at $5.95/mo offering 1GB/20GB with the ability to host unlimited domains.

I completely understand the concept of overselling. I actually had a site hosted by that notorious web provider. I can't seem to remember the name now, but they held promotions where you can ZAP your account and increase it by 5x the current settings.

However, unless dreamhost plans on going under soon, which I doubt, dreamhost has gotten good recommendations from folks at WHT.

And HostPC will drop your site like a rock on water if someone ELSE attempts to hack/attack it.

Stay away, IMO.

Could you expand on this? What do you mean...and what happened? I've had a site compromised twice (phpBB-related) and they were very helpful. They were also very fair in a dispute I had recently with Nirman. I'm curious as to the problem you had...could you ellaborate?

HostPC supports Installatron and a SMF forum is very easy to setup with a similar feel to phpbb.

BTW: Another satisfied customer . . .even with the Hurricane Wilma outage, still a solid service. . .

Dabuddha,

There has to be an easier way of doing this, but:

Set up the subdomain.
Inside the subdomain, create an index.html file with a javascript instant (meaning no-delay) redirect to domain.com/squirrelmail.

The problem is that this might conflict, since domain.com/webmail goes to uebimail...a truly terrible program.

Post helpdesk ticket or forums topic over at HostPC for more in-depth help if that doesn't work, or post back here and tell us if it did (I'm interested in that myself).

This sale ends at Midnight (ET) TONIGHT! Less than 24 hours to take advantage of these deals. This offer will not be repeated this quarter (Jan - Mar)!

Ok, we've been hounded for a "sale" - so here we go. Bottom line - new customers get 2x the amount of disk space and bandwidth as currently quoted on our homepage during this sale. Reseller quotas are also double what is advertised on the reseller page.

Compare to 1and1 which I've been using with no problems for free for 2 years - but year 3 will end sometime soon...

I've used both -- I got in the 1and1 deal, too -- if you've ignored the software perk w/1and1, grab it before the time is up. I use the NetObjects Fusion that was included -- and I like it a lot. Ulead's PhotoImpact is good, too. (but the very newest one they offer is getting poor reviews)

I set my dad up with hostpc about a year and a half ago -- and the Direct Admin interface is a bajillion times better than the 1and1 interface. I find my dad's website faster than my less demanding 1and1 webpage. Haven't actually measured the difference -- but it "feels" twice as fast.

The only annoying thing for me is the web-site statistics. They used to have "awstats" -- which was wonderfully informative.... but.... it turned out it had security issues. Now awstats is a banned product on hostpc. I'm somewhat put-off by the general tone of the message... where it seems like no matter what fixes are made to awstats -- it will remain banned just because someone hacked an old version.

I lost track of the date the 1and1 thing expires -- but I knew it was pretty soon -- so I went ahead and took this deal.
