Hey guys,

Is the article on Tom's worth a rat's toss? The Soltek and Soyo boards are such good competitors?
Anyone have the Soltek board? Is it stable? and what the hell is that Red Storm overclocking thing-a-majig...

Cheers,

maxxy

From what i've seen Soltek makes quality motherboards. They're a pretty unknown brand, but they make nice boards.

They are a popular cheap board, outside the US. I wouldn't say the stability is up there with the best, but you get awesome bang for your buck

Is Tom's claim that the soltek board is the "King of Overclocking" valid? What exactly is red storm overclocking?
If the board is as good as TH says, then I'll probably get it for my new system. Anyone know of distributers in the US? I found one site in Canada that carried the board, but I would like to buy domestic to save shipping...

I heard the soltek board WILL NOT support the alpha PAL8045, which is already in-route to my house. Oh well... IF anyone find otherwise and succeeds in mounting a PAL8045 on this board, let me know

I've got a Soltek SL-75DRV2 266a Mobo and It's been as stable as a rock and not given me any probs at all unlike my old Abit KT7-raid which was a pain in the butt.

I decided to take the plunge and get a Soltek 75DRV2 after reading all the good reviews about them and one thing i do know is that it's rapid & i've overclocked my AthlonXP 1800+ from the default (1545mhz) using the redstorm option to (1725mhz) and it will still go higher but i'm happy running at 1725mhz.........

The redstorm overclocking feature is an option in the bios menu and when selected the motherboard automatically starts to overclock the settings likeCPU FSB mhz until it reaches it's overclockable peak and then it turns it back a couple of MHZ so it sets at a stable speed..

I got this board two days ago and had a heck of a time getting it to work initially. I am no newbie to motherboard installs as I used to work for a PC maker and made
about 10 systems a day. After I got it running it would crash all the time and I was about to give up on the board when common sense hit me and I decided to test my brand new Crucial PC2100 memory. As it turned out I had 1 bad stick of memory. After I removed it the system has been rock solid. I really don't think that the memory caused my installation problems, but it was definately the cause of the instability.
I have an Xp 1700 + unlocked and running at 1533 or so (133 x 11.5) and it is very stable.
I want the Alpha 8045 myself and I don't think it will fit without a mod, but with a little cut off the corner I think it will fit. Don't quote me on that as I haven't tried it yet.
I have heard mixed things about the Red Storm and don't plan on trying it myself.
The only thing that bugs me about this system is that I have both SCSI and IDE drives installed and if I boot off a floppy the SCSI is always the last drive even though it's my 2nd boot device. On my Asus board the second boot device was always the C: drive even if you booted off a floppy. That is a minor issue though.
It was a gamble getting this board. It was between the Soltek and the Epox and I decided that with all the known issues with the Epox that it was worth gambling on this board. So far I am very happy with my choice.
