AKA Bribery

One must be careful of differing social and cultural norms when examining bribery. Expectations of when a monetary transaction is appropriate can differ from place to place. Political campaign contributions in the form of cash, for example, are considered criminal acts of bribery in some countries, while in the United States, provided they adhere to election law, are legal

So it's either not bribery, or it's legal bribery. Either way, it's legal, and therefore the whole discussion is moot, is it not? Maybe I misunderstood you guys.

wow are you actually arguing in favor our asininely corrupt oligarchical system!? wow

How much money are you worth?

Money is BS. I rate worth in terms of bandwidth and lack of cap. I don't think i'm arguing for anything. Obviously the US political system is ridiculous. And weren't you the guy cheering for the end of the world?

The obvious answer is removing the $$$ from politics. How you get there is the problem. Public financing in some form would do it.

I think we need 10 new rules, and number 7 will shock you!

Sorry OP, your suggestion is too easily defeated because the deals are made at the party level and powers that be can make one's life wonderful without one cent to a war chest. There are hundreds of people motivated by power and power corrupts more than mere money.

One rule would be to ban the Republican party like Germany banned the Nazi party.

The overthrow of Salvador Allende in Chile during the early '70s was orchestrated by the CIA. Pinochet replaced Allende in one of the oldest real democracies in the western hemisphere. Of course, Pinochet was a fascist, and atrocities were committed under his leadership. The US Justice Department was investigating some of these atrocities victimizing American citizens under Janet Reno during the 1990s. There was even the hope of extraditing Pinochet to the US, and there was speculation that Pinochet might reveal the complicity of George H. W. Bush when he was CIA Director.

After Chile toppled Pinochet, they rewrote the Chilean constitution to bar participation in their government of any political party found guilty of similar crimes for 15 years.

So . . . it's always possible. But they'd have to do something very, very bad.

Personally, despite my own legislators whom I support -- wanting and hoping that Trump can be "successful," I want him to fail bigtime -- bigly -- big league. The election of Trump was a mistake.

You can't learn to avoid putting your hand on the hot stove unless you get burned.

My stance on political contributions is as follows:

1. Only American citizens eligible to vote ought to be allowed to make political contributions. So that would eliminate, unions, corporations, foreign nationals, special interest groups* and dead people (that's for Cook County).

2. No limits. If a person wants to give their entire fortune to a political candidate, of what business is it of others?

3. No cash and no loans.

4. Full and immediate disclosure. That means within 12 hours of giving the money, the amount, who gave it, to whom it was given and the source of that money should be in the public domain for any and all to see. That also means that even if it just one dollar it must be reported and reported in full. Any contributions that a candidate receives that does not meet these qualifications must be immediately returned and if the money can't be returned it must be turned over to the local, state or federal government, depending on what office the candidate is running for.

That's my idea of campaign finance reform.

*Special Interest groups would include the NRA. They should not be able to give money to any candidate or political party because the NRA has no vote. If the NRA, under my plan, wanted to take a position on an issue, then they would have every right to make their own political ads and air them as they see fit. Just so long as there was no coordination with any party organization or candidate.

The same would hold true for unions. Or churches. Or any organization.
