My friend took a test at work for some promotion and this was one of the questions. Anyone have any idea what the code for KIND and the word for the code 475 are!?!? I've been staring at this for an hour and have no clue.

Aha! The words and numbers are not across from each other. The code for kind is 2978. You want the code for sock, which is 1432. 475 is one.

Assume it's simple substitution. Then you know that the words and the codes directly to their right don't match up. Look for letters common to multiple words and then look for numbers in those same positions. This allows you to build a dictionary.

Edit: By the way, what the hell kind of job has this as a test for a promotion?

I think it's a pattern recognition exercise.
Pattern recognition is part of IQ tests and it's a feature of humans. Conspiracy theorists abuse of it.

I wonder why they're testing for IQ for a promotion. Either HR is bored or they have hundreds of equal applications and want to weed out people in some way.
