*Solved* Since I installed a 200GB HDD I cannot copy files from CD to Desktop? It get a Memory Dump or Reboot. Help!

Hi All, and thanks for the help,

Anyways, ever since I installed a 200GB HDD I cannot copy files from CD Rom to desktop; when I try it does a Memory Dump or Reboot... This is on a dual boot system that has Win98SE and Win2000Pro and this happens in Win2000Pro... This is the last memory dump info:

Have any idea what my problem is?

disconnect the drive and see if it goes away, if it does I would lean towards a bad IDE/sata port and/or driver

I'm not sure that you understand my problem... When I try to download files off a CDRW Disk to the Desktop it does a memory dump or reboots?

Yes, and I said to remove the hard drive that you installed which started the problem and see if it goes away(unless the hard drive is the boot drive)

Well, the error just tells you that the information can't write/read to the following address.

I'm going to take a guess and say it's a driver issue. Maybe the contoller. Anything else you've installed recently?

It's called copying files from the cd to the desktop, not downloading, but how did you jumper your ide drives?

PurdueRy, yes it's the boot drive.

sisq0kidd, it's a fresh install; it has everything on it that was on the 40GB IBM HDD that had a boot failure... When you say "contoller" what are you referring to, and is there a way to check it?... And when you say driver do mean like Sound Card, Video Card, or could it be a software program?

jackschmittusa, ok sorry, I was wondering about the term, thanks... I have HDD set as master and it has two partitions on it (C: & D: ) and Win98 is on C: and win2000pro is on D:.

Also, this is a Maxtor 200GB HDD with a 8MB cache and my system has two CD Roms and I've tried copying files from both cd roms to the desktop with the same result... It's like the HDD is not interacting with the CD Roms right?

"contoller" refers to the ide controler, part of the mb. How are the optical drives jumpered? Will they play an audio cd? Is the pin orientation of the data cables correct? Is DMA mode set and working on the ide channels (in device manager)?

The CD Roms play music fine, and install software programs fine (I did have trouble with one program- Windows Publisher 2000, it wouldn't install)... DMA is set in device manager and no flags... As far as how the things are hooked up pins, jumpers, masters, slaves, I'm pretty sure they are all set correctly.

You think that because this is such a large/new drive with such a large cache there would be some settings in the BIOS that need to be changed? or other settings elsewhere?

As long as Windows recognizes the full capacity of the drive, there should not be any settings to change. I have run a 300gb pata (16mb cache) drive for some time for some time now with no issues, so I don't see how just the drive size or cache could be a problem. I also dual boot, with Win2K and XP, and have not had the issue in 2K.

A quick search says some people have had the problem with a faulty usb device, some with driver issues.

Yippy... We got it figured out... What it was is the V-Cool, a Software CPU Cooler that I use... When the Cool Bit feature is engaged the machine will not allow you to copying files from cd to the desktop, or let you install some programs... I turned off the cool bit feature (the idle loop feature was also off) and was able to copy files to desktop from cd and also to install Publisher 2000 which I wasn't able to install before. And I am also able to use VirtualDrive 7 that also didn't work... This is great I'm up and running again.

Also, I don't think this had anything to do with it but just in case: another thing I did was to remove an old freebe alarm clock program (can't remember the name) that I picked up on the net somewhere... The reason that I thought it might be the problem is because awhile back I tried to install it, and the machine wouldn't let me for some reason... Anyways, just thought I'd list it just incase someone else has a similar problem.
