Indian Navy, "Hello thanks you for calling Indian Navy my name is Mike how can I service you today?"

Me, "HELP HELP I AM BEING ATTACKED BY PIRATES"

Indian Navy, "Ok sir I can help you with that can you hold on please for one moment".

Indian Navy, " Thank you for holding, let me just verify the problem here, you are being attacked my pirates is that correct sir."

From the BBC article:
When it demanded the vessel stop for investigation, the pirate ship responded by threatening to "blow up the naval warship if it closed on her", the statement said.

Pirates then fired on the Tabar, and the Indians say they retaliated and that there was an explosion on the pirate vessel, which sank.

I don't think they realized that nations don't spend the big bucks on navies for looks. This wasn't a merchant vessel they were dealing with. It reminds me of that guy from Goldeneye screaming "I'm invincible!"...

 Yes because you know for a fact the pirates have already returned the oil tankers they hijacked along w/ all the hostages and got their loot from the Arabs. Where did you get the idea that I was talking about the event that happened in the OP?

they weren't the same pirates....

Hahaha, wonder how that happened.

I am still wondering how the actual piracy process works, how do the pirates get on board in the first place? Do ships simply give up after a pirate encounter, it's not like they can sneak up on the merchant ships, are ships afraid of pirates' weapons?

They could call them Q-ships.

I don't really understand why the Saudis aren't protecting their oil tankers. I mean, it's basically the most precious cargo on the water and they're not even giving it a destroyer escort? We sell them so much weapons and equipment, but they don't seem to use it.

Edit: @ Baked, I'm really not sure if you're being sarcastic.

Yeah Baked, I'm thinking that the chances are pretty much nil that the pirates are well organized enough that the dimwits who shot at the Indians were the same ones that took that oil tanker.

Good job India, you just cost all the hostages their lives and turned the pirates violent. Idiots.

Baboo, we are having the somalian robber ship in our sights and we need to be firing and sinking them.

I guess nobody thought this was as funny as I did. Just think of it being said in an Indian accent and hilarity ensues.

The ocean is a VERY LARGE place. Even with hundreds of destroyers it would be impossible to cover the millions of sq. km of surface.

And, for the super-tanker, it's a HUGE ship (longer than the Chrysler building) with only 25 crew, some of whom were probably sleeping, and the rest working. The pirates are approaching in the dark, it's difficult to see small vessels...they grapple up using hooks and take the crew by surprise.

It is stupid that they're not using established guarded lanes or hiring a private security force.

Actually, they failed because many of the pirates got away buy jumping aboard a towed motor boat.

Why not put 20 heavily armed army guys on each freighter? 20 versus a small group trying to board in a localized spot. Death to pirates!

The Geneva convention..... To be a "merchant vessal" it can only have a shotgun and pistol IIRC.
Well, does this "Geneva Convention" thing that you speak of say anything about NINJAS??!

That's what I don't get...they got several hundred million dollars tied up in stock and the value of the ship, yet they won't spend a million or so on some private security to go with them? OK - so they're not allowed to keep heavy weapons on the ship - how about hire a few boats to accompany them and stock them up to the gills with heavy artillery?

I can't imagine that costing any more than the ransom that's demanded. Unless there's some kind of law preventing that, I don't see why they don't do that knowing that they're going through a known pirate infested area.
