The solution is quite simple: don't negotiate, demand they give up and leave otherwise do exactly what was done to these 3 idiots.

This is the correct answer. Tell them they have an hour to GTFO or they die. Simple solution.

err, how does that help. You would not know they were pirates until they boarded at which time it is too late for a missile to do any good.

I think you can tell whether they're pirates or not by seeing 5-10 somali men in a small boat heading towards a cargo ship.

After the recent hostage situation... these guys have proven they are absolutely retarded.
And maybe we'll smarten up for once and actually finish the job with Somalia this time. Why can't we ever decide to finish something, just once? Not since World War II has a "Western" country actually finished something they started, specifically our little ventures into Korea, Vietnam, and the latest being Iraq and Somalia. And it bites us in the ass down the road.
Hopefully we finish Iraq this time appropriately. There is only so much hand-holding we should do, agreed... but those 4 cases have shown that at some point they decided, well this should do... and oops. Not so much.

Somalia never returned to order after the last time, and is just a breeding ground for this nutjobs.

I can't wait til they start banding together and forming little navies. That will give us that much more reason to blow them up without too much criticism from the bleeding hearts. We're showing the pirates that if they mess with American ships/crews, they die. Other countries need to do the same.

So they lose any bargaining power they might have had? Sure, thats smart.

Nice logic there mr pirate.

yes, it's completely retarded on their end, strategically. Now that the word is out that they are seeking vengeance/violence, there will be much less of an initiative for companies to negotiate with them. No one is going to pay their silly ransoms now that there is the very real possibility that they will kill. (iirc, they haven't yet murdered a captive, have they? it seems they usually just steal the boats and send the crew off, or hold them captive at worst).

too heavy to move around, just use a 30 cal MG; I'm going to guarantee that some pirate in an inflatable boat a couple hundred miles off the cost sees a stream coming at him at 300+rpm, they'll be turning around.

Is there any reason freighter crews haven't armed themselves yet? A month or two ago I heard that there's some international restriction on armaments to be carried by freighters... if that is the case then the UN needs to step up and pass a resolution allowing ships to arm their crew, at least if they are passing near the horn of Africa. Hopefully the US will take the lead in this matter in light of this event.

Might be hard for some people to believe, but not all issues can end with both sides singing Kumbayah. Killing the scumbags has its downsides, but seems to be the best option for a number of reasons.

Only problem is the sheer amount of traffic that runs through that area. We can't protect everyone, and unfortunately there are very few counties capable of deploying significant naval forces to the area.

However, I fully expect other countries to eventually start asking for our support if the situation escalates. Everyone hates it when we police the world, unless we're doing it for them.

Yes, but not enough to justify engaging them. Someone with naval experience can answer this better but what is the "hostile" range considered in international waters? In wartime you might be able to blow them out of the water after they came within a mile, but not during peacetime.

The second they band together as a force, it will bring down forces like the U.S. Navy to obliterate them.
Haven't they learned from the past, or from movies at least? Maybe we need to "pirate" them some copies of "Pirates of the Carribean".

Maybe they have been watching Black Hawk down.
