Commercial success doesn't equate to a quality/good product. It just means someone has convinced a large number of people with questionable intelligence to part with their money.

McDonalds is everywhere and sells a ton of food, I suppose you would make the argument that because of this, they make great food.

-KeithP

With something as subjective as music, there are really no objective measuresof "quality," even his 13 grammys.

I like his songs, they are basically his life story. As far as music goes these days there was actually a little insight into his lyrics even if it was in the form of rap.

Em's great but people who say he's by far the greatest ever are overdoing it. Jeremy Lin in the NBA's similar, his skin color makes people give him far too much credit. I'd say Em's easily in my top 20 but I don't think he fits in my top 10.

His skin color helped as a stepping stone, but his talent was the reason for the success and longevity.

See also: Vanilla Ice, Bubba Sparxx, Paul Wall, Mac Miller, Asher Roth, Yelawolf.

Also note that nobody really give a shit about Jeremy Lin now (after a brief bout of Linsanity). I doubt we will be talking about him as the greatest anything in 15 years.

And name any rapper that can't do that?

Not knocking your opinion, but I was looking for something that would absolutely set him apart from any other rapper.

Even Riff Raff can paint a picture with words.

Let's leave it up to an east coast Jewish American Princess to lecture us about good rap music.

Macklemore is the 2013 version of Vanilla Ice, The fact he's white is the only thing he has in common with Eminem. There is no reason to mention them in the same breath unless the thread title was "name 2 totally different rappers" a lot of rapping greats have given Em lots of respect. Rakim said if he was black he would be the Ali of rap. Macklemore has 1 catchy song and no great rappers will be saying shit about him in 10 years.

i had no clue macklemore was white until this post lol. i thought he was black cause he sounds like timbaland.

and macklemore is all over rap stations. pretty sure shehateme is in nova, and he's all over the dc stations you get around there - wpgc 95.5 and wkys 93.9. he's on the baltimore station 92.3 also but you probably don't get that where you are.

you must not listen to hip hop stations.

I've loved Eminem since he came out really. I mostly like his old slim shady ego but I still enjoy Marshall mathers and Eminem

I listen to rap stations all day and have never heard Macklemore ever.

If I turn it to a Top40/Mix station I hear Same Love all the time.

Then again, I'm not exactly looking for his music either. So, maybe that makes the difference.

Oh, was I wrong?

You ran away from the thread after you were thoroughly made fun of for not having a single clue what you were talking about.

Well i give him credit for getting all that success. I was never really into his raps about killing his ex-wife and what not. This was back when I was in high school. I have to admit, I only listened to him and rap in general because that was the popular thing to do. Almost 30 now and I hardly listen to rap. I'll play some 90s rap only because that brings back some nostalgia.

About Macklemore, very refreshing kinda music compared to other "rap" songs out there. Seems intelligent in that he's able to gain an audience across the entire populace. I hear him more on HOT 99.5

lol......

what?

Listen sweetheart, just because you sucked off one of Ludacris' stage hands in the back of the BMW daddy bought for you at an NYC concert while your Pomeranian watched doesn't make you an expert on rap music. I realize the result was probably the most valuable thing to ever come out of your mouth, but you're still just an east coast, white Jewish American princess.

You didn't exactly give objective reasons in terms of what those in your list do better either.

Those people on my list are legends. Many of them are pioneers of Hip Hop back when it was just a cool thing to do rapping with your friends back in the 80's and early 90's.

What as Eminem pioneered for Hip Hop?

Oh yes, he's a White Rapper.

What else?

Anyone who knows anything about Hip Hop and Rap know exactly who those people in the list are and what they have done.

Personally, I think he's sort of a douche. Professionally, I fucking love him!

He did alot for Dre to be honest, more then Dre did for him. Their relationship created some of the best rap albums/songs that I own.
