Some 15 years later, how do you feel about Eminem?

He did alot for Dre to be honest, more then Dre did for him.

His music was, eh, 'well-engineered.' Catchy...like pop.

I don't understand any of the applause for his lyrics.

It's much easier to give a pass to 'freestyle' rap. Kinda like those famous 'speed painters,' or any other art form that may lose a little complexity at the expense of speed and improvisation.

And yes, I'm sure someone will link me to some 'amazing' Eminem freestyle or something. But he was generally known for his LP's, for which he had copious time to refine his writing. And 'refined' is not exactly what I would call it.

If anything, he seems better in hindsight because of the lowering of the bar. 'Rap' quality has been in a steady nosedive since the 90's.

Most importantly, I just don't think his rapping was that good. The the actual execution of said lyrics. As an example...Atmosphere is about the only rap/hip-hop I listen to regularly. I wouldn't debate his lyrical quality over Eminem's...I do think he's better, but it's not worth the argument. His 'flow,' however? Eminem = inferior.

Agreed. Really like his work. Top 10 easy.. probably top 5 but I've never compiled a list and its really been a long time since I really listened to hip hop. Unfortunately I usually just turn on the radio nowadays.

He crossed some taboos in his lyrics. It definitely got him attention and was some wicked negative shock energy, but over the long haul such sentiments (like about raping his mother) just make you a dull and numb person.

Musically, I stopped listening to him around 8 mile? It's all minor key stuff anyways.

I do think that he has a weird relationship with Dr. Dre. Eminem IMO is better than Dre in many talents, but Dre lent him street credibility so he wouldn't become another Vanilla Ice.

I wouldn't let my kid listen to Eminem. I don't think he has any lasting value.

I haven't listened to any for quite some time, but it was very influential at the time.

He is my favorite rapper, although that doesn't really say a whole lot.

and macklemore is all over rap stations. pretty sure shehateme is in nova, and he's all over the dc stations you get around there - wpgc 95.5 and wkys 93.9. he's on the baltimore station 92.3 also but you probably don't get that where you are.

I heard the lyrics dozens of times before I listened to them once. I would dare say I have never actually listened to the song until last week.

Not many artists make albums with songs that are ALL a specific style/ tailored to a specific crowd. Most albums have the hit single or two, some filler club music, and then meaningful stuff mixed in.
