Emimem is SO overrated.

Oh yes...and Jay Electronica

Exhibit C

^^^ This song alone is better than 99.9% of that "I hate my mom" bullshit Eminem has ever put out.

Shiny Suit Theory Ft. Jay Z

Jay Electronica - Renaissance Man

*Edit* Oops, Dana Coppafeel and Action Bronson can't be in this post.

And Jay Electronica's overrated, we could play this game for ever. Eminem bit a lot of his style from Chino XL, and Chino should be known by everyone. But, shit doesn't always work out the way it should. I'm listening to Chino's newest double album right now and it's sad how he's not known outside of the Jay Electronic type crowd.

I also don't agree with your "he sucks, what did he pioneer?" statement, nobody in rap has pioneered shit for a long time, I'd say imho the last rapper to pioneer anything was Lord Finesse or Chino XL. But that doesn't mean a newer cat like Em shouldn't get respected for being one of the top lyricists the game has seen. Everyone from Kane to KRS to Rakim to DMC to Masta Ace have given Em his props.

It's understandable that not everyone's a fan of his lyrical content. But for straight multi-syllabic rhymes Em's in a class that only a few cats can even see. Listen to his 2 verses on Jay's Renegade, ignore the actual subject matter and just listen to how he has damn near an entire verse of a single triple and quadruple syllable rhyme pattern. Another dude can can spit insane like that is Papoose. I can't hate on any rapper who can drop 16-24 bars on a constant 2/3 word rhyme scheme. Both of Em's verses on Renegade would fall in my top 50 all time. And I've been listening to rap hardcore for almost 30 years now. So I got easy a couple thousand verses floating around in my head. I think just in general his spots on that song are some of the best period. An Em + Pap song would blow my fucking mind.

While nowhere near as good as Em, Action Bronson's crazy. He's got a dope voice, tight flow and lots of presence and wit. He's an interesting cat, even if he somewhat copies Em.

>>Do you know why Dre's record was so sucessful? He's rapping about big
screen tv's, blunts, 40's and bitches. You're rapping about homosexuals
and vicodin... I can't sell this shit.

Think I liked that aspect the best about him... I really liked the slim shady alter ego. Liked the slim shady LP and the next couple. Haven't heard anything newer than that because I live under a rock.

dre and Eminem are in a class of their own. dre is usually Huber serious, Eminem can be silly or serious, and then u have guys like snoop who are just straight silly.
rappers, there are so many, but few are as elite as them. many rappers come out with a few great CDs, but quickly fade into the past, such as 50cent.
I don't think he's as legendary as say tupac is, but he's pretty damn close.

now, let's not compare these guys to hip hop artists like Lupe fiasco. Lupe is a totally different genre.

jayz is his own genre, his delivery is so unusual, sort of like kanye west too. its not really good rhyming or smooth flow, its more of just a collection of thoughts. but 99 problems is hard as shit, so I digress. that's Paul Rubens doing anyway.

Eminem is by far a deeper composer and musician then he gets credit for, his whole package is very diverse and compelling

I'm not a huge fan of Eminem's but I recognize his talent and skill. What I'm most impressed with was his ability to come in and shake the 'white rapper' label and just be taken seriously in his own right.

He probably opened the door for people like Macklemore. But I think his influence seems somewhat limited in retrospect.. I might have expected more white rap stars to follow but aside from Macklemore's recent success I can't think of one (I admit I'm not a close follower of hip-hop).

But maybe he did open things up for other artists to take on more hip-hop style.. like Justin Timberlake types.

Haven't listened since Encore.

The Slim Shady LP (1999)
The Marshall Mathers LP (2000)
The Eminem Show (2002)
...were awesome.

Maybe I just grew up.

Rap in general is a horrible influence among kids and a contributing factor in the gangs and violence today.

These rap artists should be ashamed of themselves IMO. Yes I'm getting old.

Listen to Macklemores album. Or at minimum read the lyrics/listen to his song "A Wake"

He sings about what you are referring.

I actually really like Macklemore and hope he had continued success. "The Heist" is a pretty great album and a few of the songs feel almost inspired by Eminem especially to me the song Wing$

As far as Eminem goes I grew up and still live in metro Detroit so I love him but after his first couple albums I fell off his bandwagon. He is a great artist I loved him in 8 Mile but now I don't listen to him much.

Better be careful advocating Macklemore in this thread. The self-proclaimed rap experts might accuse you of having poor musical taste.

And for everyone replying 'who', in regard to who is eminem, stop being dumb.

Not many artists make albums with songs that are ALL a specific style/ tailored to a specific crowd. Most albums have the hit single or two, some filler club music, and then meaningful stuff mixed in.

I'd suggest, then, that the work of those artists isn't primarily art. It's a product.

Plenty of bands and solo musicians still make excellent albums that do not have filler.

I wouldn't have agreed with you years ago, as I'm generally very opposed to censorship, but you're right.

I'm not sure there's an easy fix, though. Censorship isn't it. We can't force parents to be parents. I dunno. :/

I like macklemore for more than just his 2 or 3 popular songs.

His whole album is interesting to me as is his life story. Like I mentioned before A Wake is a great song as is Ten Thousand Hours, The Other Side and Starting Over(in that order of listening) I really hope that will commercial success he can continue to put out high quality albums.

Rap, video games, violent movies...anything else to add to the list of excuses we can make for poor parenting?

Agreed+. I don't care for his persona, or the subject matter of most of his lyrics, but he has an amazing talent for stringing together verses and phrases that just work in creative ways.

Anytime I hear him on one of those awful collaborative tracks with Drake/Lil Wayne/etc. I'm blown away by how much more advanced his wordsmithing is compared to those morons.

It is art, but yeah, I definitely wouldn't want anyone under the age of like...25 listening to that stuff. Most crime is committed by males aged 17-24.
