some action over at LHC@Home Classic (SixTrack)

...just thought i'd let everyone know that there's been some action lately over at LHC@Home Classic (SixTrack). i'm guessing that CERN has terabytes, maybe petabytes, of data to be analyzed now that its official that a Higgs-like particle has been indirectly detected, and just recently (as in the last week or two) that data has become available to crunch. i would have posted about this earlier, except i thought this would just be another little blip n the radar. it wasn't until i had a peek over at the LHC@Home Classic forums that i realized that something much bigger is going on. i don't really know how long this is going to last, but i want everyone to know that a generous amount of tasks are still available for download...more than i have ever seen in years actually (~374K WUs and climbing).

well the tap has finally run dry for the first time in over a month on the SixTrack project. hopefully we'll get more work in the coming days/weeks. i see in the SixTrack News Sub-forum that quite a bit is on the horizon with regard to further developing the poject, but i don't see anything specific regarding the next batch of work and when it will come...

They loaded it up this morning with a batch of short units. These probably won't last long at all.

yeah i noticed that...unfortunately several hundred tasks is nothing compared to the 1/2 million tasks that were available at the peak of this project's recent return to life...we'll see what happens.

*EDIT* - looks like ~3,000 new tasks are available for download now. fortunately for me, i've had enough LHC SixTrack work in my hosts' queues to hold me over since the tasks just about ran out. so as long as the server only stays dry for short spurts here and there, i should be fine...

now's a good time. they were fresh out of tasks for a short while earlier today, but now its back up to ~35K tasks. every time i think they're going to run dry, more work becomes available. there must still be lots of data to pour over since that Higgs-like particle was indirectly detected...

yes there are plenty of WU's available. the total number of WU's fluctuates quite a bit and occasionally runs out...but only for a short while, and then new work becomes available. i'd say things are currently the opposite of what they used to be (the project is 99% active now instead of 99% down). i believe the project is very active again due to the discovery of the Higgs-like particle several weeks ago and the flood of new data it generated...it all needs to be crunched.

i don't really remember...the last time i had LHC work was several years ago, and i don't recall exactly what i was crunching. there were (and still are) other less powerful accelerators at CERN, so perhaps we were crunching data from particle collisions that took place in those accelerators at one time...

for the first time in a few months now the LHC@Home project has run out of work. reserves have gotten quite low on the server a handful of times over the last few months, but each time it would fill back up before running completely dry. unfortunately that didn't happen this time, and the server is now dry. i'm hoping that more work will become available before the LHC@H work buffers on my own machines run dry...


*EDIT #1* - apparently they ran the server dry intentionally. i don't understand why exactly, but word is that more work is on its way. i suppose if there are going to be anymore updates, they'll be in THIS THREAD on the LHC@HOme SixTrack forums.

I suspect they did this to purge the queue of tasks of re-sends.

I had a bunch of pendings with the 3rd WU saying "waiting for resend".
They are now status validated!

for those who haven't noticed, SixTrack work production has recently ground to a halt. and for those who are wondering just what the heck is going on, it turns out that they started having problems w/ result replication, and they also ran out of disk space at CERN. the maintenance period was projected to be approx. a few days starting back on the 28th of last month...obviously its taking longer than that. hopefully they'll keep us updated in THIS THREAD on on the SixTrack forums. either way, this isn't the start of another several months/years long project hiatus, so hang in there and new work will come our way soon...
