God bless nick and, if I can add a little advice, don't let fighting the cancer become the center of your life.

I wish you the best nick, you're not too much older than I am, so it kinda hits home. Keep your head up man.

Sounds like you caught it in time, your odds should be very good.

Magnus had a good point, don't let this become all you think about; enjoy your life! Go outside your comfort zone, meet new people, take that class you've been putting off, do what ever you can to get the most out of life without being reckless.

Good luck man, I know you can beat it!

So they are fairly certain the cancer is only on a couple inches of my small intestine. They said they cannot be 100% on that until they actually open me up to remove that portion of my intestine. Still, that is great news to hear. The tentative plan (from how I understood it) is to remove the section of diseased intestine and then blast the area with chemo to get rid of anything that may not have been removed by the surgery. I believe the surgery will be fairly soon, when I get a date I will post it here. Again, thanks for the support everyone. You nerds are great [/quote]

So no chemo before the surgery to reduce the tumor? that's kind of odd, or is it early stage? you never said which stage we're talking about

Are you working with U Chicago or Northwestern? UIC?

U Chicago is excellent for oncology

This all sounds promising, though.

First I'd like to say that I wish you a quick recovery.

The 2nd thing I'd like you to think about is where you are going to get your treatment from. After having a father succumb to late stage melanoma years ago and have worked in many hospitals, I know that on a personal level I will accept nothing less than a cancer research hospital for care....a teaching/university hospital if I or anyone else I know gets the sad news of cancer. I'm not trying to say you won't get a desirable outcome at any hospital, just putting out my 2 cents as to what I would do after seeing some things in my life.

Take care dude and best of luck with everything.

4 pages of replies later, there's probably not much I can add to this, but jesus Nick...sorry to hear the news, but glad it sounds localized. People say "at least you have your health" all the time...but your advice not to take it for granted struck a chord with me tonight. You're my age, this could easily be my situation. Wow. I need to stop stressing over stupid shit.

Keep us posted, mate.

Good thing that most people don't realize 90% of cancers are not deadly these days! You will make it through man.

Based on your elaboration, you may want to get some other opinions from other doctors. As I mentioned about my coworker with intestinal cancer, he had radiation treatment on the localized area for six months prior to the surgery to shrink the tumor(zinfamous, they wouldn't do chemo before surgery). Being in Boston, he was able find one of the top specialist in the world for this type of cancer.

I'll talk to him today and have him send you an email.

Best of luck nick. Sounds like a fairly positive prognosis, considering it's cancer. I'm not really the praying type but I'll certainly keep you in my thoughts.

U Chicago hospital is where I have been going. I really like it there

As far as your question...I think the doctors feel it is early stage so they are going to try and go in and take out the tumor ASAP. Im headed back in tomorrow, I have a notebook full of questions this time that I will ask to get all the info. I will post back when i get my answers.

the updates sound really promising nick
now that i've thought about it there was a guy i used to bum rides home from in college that had to have part of his intestine removed because it was pre-cancerous?. anyway... he's done fine. he has to eat like 10 small meals a day instead of the usual 3, but grazing is a good way to do it for all of us.

I'm so sorry to read about this man. It does sound like it was caught really early, so you have very good chances of a full recovery. Try to keep upbeat. You can beat this.

my brother went through 6 weeks of chemo + radiation prior to planned surgery. He was diagnosed at stage 4, however. (with 6 week recovery before the procedure)

So yeah, they will do it, all depends on the diagnosis. Radiation makes more sense.
