Got a chance to hang out with some friends who are still teaching in public schools in SE Michigan. As usual the stories were depressing but two things stuck out to me:
1: A couple of schools are now trying the 'no suspension, only mediation' approach to fights. So far the teacher's are unconvinced with one having to call security on the same two kids 3 times in a week, even after the mediation meetings. Seems like everyone is losing as the kids in the class keep losing class time to the people fighting.
2: Emotional support animals are now a thing in school. Enough that one teacher complained to administration about having to keep re-arranging seating to keep the emotional support animals from negatively interacting with each other. (ex: A cat constantly growling and hissing at a dog all class). Their suggestion was for the teacher to attend a seminar titled 'Dealing with emotional support animals in class'
