Got a chance to hang out with some friends who are still teaching in public schools in SE Michigan. As usual the stories were depressing but two things stuck out to me:

1: A couple of schools are now trying the 'no suspension, only mediation' approach to fights. So far the teacher's are unconvinced with one having to call security on the same two kids 3 times in a week, even after the mediation meetings. Seems like everyone is losing as the kids in the class keep losing class time to the people fighting.

2: Emotional support animals are now a thing in school. Enough that one teacher complained to administration about having to keep re-arranging seating to keep the emotional support animals from negatively interacting with each other. (ex: A cat constantly growling and hissing at a dog all class). Their suggestion was for the teacher to attend a seminar titled 'Dealing with emotional support animals in class'

Thats a trend at your local high school.
Do you really think its a trend across America?

I said "public schools" on purpose to denote more than one school (Its also not my local HS). They are spread across quite a few districts so it certainly appears to be a trend in SE MI. Given the increase in "emotional support animals" on planes, hotels, college campuses and whatnot (plenty of stories about their increase if you care to google) I think a larger scope is possible

It's been straight down hill since they allowed cell phones in class.

I live in Manassas Park. Talked to my neighbor a few weeks ago and he believes they do not allow cell phones IN class. But they do allow them in lockers. Of course, his freakin kids could be lying to him. Little shits.

The animals sound like a neat idea, but it should be like 1-2 "class animals". Like a couple cats or dogs that always stay in the same classroom that are ok with each other. Just letting people bring their own animals seems like it could go wrong.

My first year in high school we had a turtle in science class. Not really a "support" animal, just something fun to have. We'd go feed it and stuff. One of the students got to keep it at the end of the year though since the school was moving buildings and it was just easier to give it a new home.

You know what they do in asia? They beat the kids who have bad grades. Hows that for emotional support
Do you know who test the best and are the most qualified graduates? Mostly asians

Asian education is typically great at training people to regurgitate rote memory, concepts like math that have a single answer, or, for example: history that is about dates, not about ideas or context. These are great skills, obviously, but not so great when it comes to creative thinking and innovation. Solving more complex problems or applying novel concepts. Not that "asians" are terrible at this, I'm just speaking towards the typical education model vs the western approach. It is a different sort of training: yes, you have students coming into the workforce with a higher skill set, but it is still a skill set of "advanced automatons."

Of course, The US really isn't spectacular at either, these days.

Taking a cat around in public as an emotional support animal is barbaric. Cats are territorial and don't like being moved around all the time. At best they will tolerate what normally causes a cat an insane amount of stress. Certainly it's a terrible idea for a high school kid to be tooling one around and putting them in a room with other cats.

So what is the procedure for when one kids emotional support animal eats another kids emotional support animal? I wouldn't imagine that would help their need for emotional support.

That being said I need my emotional support Honey Badger.

We're nannying all these kids these days, yet with the way we were raised, we're not exactly running the world right either. Humanity = fail.

What if one or more students are allergic to cats/dogs? And you're going to have a smelly litter box in the room. How many animals per school? Figure in a decent-sized high school, there are at least 50 classrooms (been a while since I was in grade school). Who's going to take care of all of these animals on the weekends?

Emotional support animals for adults are one thing, emotional support animals for high school classrooms are simply taking it too far. You can pet your animal when you get home from school.

The ESA's are the kids pets so they bring them to\from the school. If someone has allergies they can either deal with it (if possible) or the school has to decide which kid gets moved to a different class. Not sure what happens if there is no alternative class

We also have a lot more Asians pitching themselves off bridges at college campuses than most other ethnicities, which is why they had to install nets at the one I work at. Double-edged sword.

Emotional support animals? That has to be one of the stupidest things I have ever heard of. They need an emotional support paddle to take care of these kids today.

There's nothing wrong with the idea of an emotional support animal, but like everything else it has to be ruined by regular people claiming they need it too. I totally understand a veteran suffering from PTSD being calmed down by his dog, I don't understand a god damned child in a normal public school bringing her cat to class. Just like everyone and their mom claiming gluten intolerance makes the ACTUAL few that may have a gluten allergy look bad. Everyone also claims to have ADD, ADHD, and other TLAs that have been blown out of proportion.
