AVLogic also has the NEC 1300A for $128.00 plus shipping (steep at $11.xx for me)....but still...$139.xx for the drive isn't bad...cheaper than everyone else!

Click me...$128.00 NEC

I have both Pioneer DVR-105 and Optorite DD0203 with the latest firmware upgrade. So far I can tell, the Optorite seems to be more picky about the DVD media. I have to use more expensive DVD media (TDK DVD-R 2X, Verbatim DVD+R 4X) while I can throw any cheap DVD media at the DVR-105 (DVDPro, CompUSA brand) and never run into any problem at all. I was also surprised that the Optorite rejects the Ritek DVD media, which is claimed as one of the best DVD media available on the market. In short, with the Optorite, I did produce some coasters, while the DVR-105 always succeeded. BTW, in case you favor the DD0203, the best thing about it is to be able to use HD Burn to put 1.4GB on a 700 MB CD-R. Just want to share some thoughts with you guys thinking about which one to get. If you don't care about HD Burn, go with Sony DRU10A, Pioneer brand DVR-105 or even better 106 for less headache. I think I would understand why some people favor Pioneer over Optorite.

I also want to jump in on this deal, but should I wait for fast 8x drives to show up? Anybody know when I'll be able to get one of those (I know plextor has one coming up that is pre-order at newegg....anything else)????

Thanks!

I've had the Optorite drive for a month now. I'm also finding it quite picky for media. DVD-R is supposed to be the most compatible media for standalones and the Optorite site only recommends 2 brands for this type of media. I bought some Sony DVD-R today and the drive won't even recognize it.

Sure you're going to be able to get one, but it will be a looong time before you can get one for $150 shipped.

I believe the 8x is out right now.

Go to this LINK and look at the Plextor PX-708A 8X drive. Click it and see it priced at $259.00.

I sure could use the light faceplate. I originally had a black setup and then went to a Koolance case which was light. Anyone out there got one that I can have or exchange for the Black?

Thanks

The Plextor only does 8x on + media,4x on - media! Also it starts at 6x and works up to 8x.A full DVD takes 15 minutes on a 4x drive,10 minutes on the 8x drive! Then there is the cost of the media, after the initial extra $100 for the drive! Is it really worth it? Not to me!

2.17 was bad and they went back to 2.16. Don't use 2.17.

Well I have the Optorite and have found that it burns perfectly at 4X when you purchase quality media. I have pretty much been using 4X +R RICOHJPNR01 by TDK, Verbatim, and Memorex. Zero coasters and nothing but perfect burns. Maybe if some users were picky about the media they chose they would get similar results.

2.17 only seems to cause problems for some users. But those problems are serious - a drive that no longer works. I didn't have a problem but I switched back anyway.

Newegg is selling the Pioneer 106 for $165.00 shipped, why would anybody want to order anywhere else? I've heard quite a few compaints about livewarehouse, check out resellerratings.

Anybody thinking about buying a DVD burner, or any computer part: SHOP WITH NEWEGG. You will not be dissapointed. You might save a few dollars elsewhere, but sacrifice service.

It depends on what you are planning to do with the DVD Burner.

If making backups of your DVD Movie Collection, you have to look for compatibility with DVD Players.
I have Two NEC's (1100A and 1300A) and all DVD Movie "backups" made with these babies work on my 3 DVD Players (Samsung, APEX, LG).

NewEgg Rocks ...

Adios amigos ...

The Pioneer A06 is a very slow burner because of write verification and it can't be turned off.
