Had a guy at my high school who totaled his M3, so as "punishment" his parents bought him a new 3 series.

Punishment fail...

We have two cars

Both 1996. I can't even afford to replace one of those cars with some cheap ass circa year 2000 model, let alone buy something expensive

This kid at school got a new Porsche 911 Turbo. I had to switch dream cars seeing that douche driving it every day. Ferrari F430 Scuderia here I come!

This was the norm for me in HS. One girl got a brand new Hummer with a bow on it delivered to school for her birthday. The dad made a huge deal about it and had it parked right in front of the school and everything.

If the kids are not greedy or spoiled and their parents can afford to give them the good life while they are growing up, then more power to them. If the kids are spoiled rotten and have bad attitudes, then their parents probably should take away the keys.....

just my opinion at least ....

We didn't really have any rich kids like that at my high school. One kid drove his dads older 911 to school sometimes, bout it. Cool kids got new civics and accords from their parents.

My Dad got me a '95 escort for bout $1500. Drove that until i was able to buy my own.

kids can be driving their parents cars

In Wellington, Fl where I grew up the kids had pretty high end cars. One of my best friends had a new 86.5 Supra Turbo, then a 328 Ferrari, then a 930 Turbo, and a Coutach in one year.

Most drove BMW's though.

The 1966 Mustang GT I drove was a $40,000 restoration (I didn't say I could sell it for that price to ward off the idiots that will go off topic).

Having a $300 gas bill covered by mom and dad was great along with insurance.

I was able to save, had two jobs and by the time I was out of college at 24 bought a nice 3/2/2 on a 1/2 acre waterfront with about 40% down and no school debt. I only worked some summers.

Some of my friends were spoiled, but they could afford to be they were already sitting on multi-million dollar trust funds waiting for them to turn 18. Others knew they'd just get mom or dad's seat at the business when it was time.

Many of them went on to create their own fortunes. Just like ghetto dwellers perpetuate their cycle, the wealthy perpetuate theirs.

ya, same kind of thing here. i went to a ridiculously rich school, kids were in cadillacs, bmws and stuff like that. i drove a datsun 210 hatchback. the door colors didnt even match, i got it as salvage and fixed it. one girl wrapped "her" maz around a tree outside the school showing off. it was her dads car, but he did buy it for her to drive. a seven-fucking-teen year old. driving a mazeratti.

people made fun of my ride regularly, but i didnt care. i did all the work to it myself, paid for it all by myself.

I don't think that's the norm. At least my kids won't be driving anything that nice.

My 1st car was given to me as my graduation gift for commuting to college in 1998. It was a 1966 AMC Rambler Classic 2 door hard top. Kind of a cool looking car but man did it have problems. Little to no heat which made those drives to school in 0 degree weather in January fun. Windshield wipers were vacuum powered so when you stepped on the gas they slowed down and almost stopped and when you let off, they'd speed up to 100mph. Bad leak in the cowel gutter/drain system and when it rained hard the floor pans filled up with about 2 inches of water. One particularly wet spring I actually had a small seedling of some plant take root in the carpet in the passenger side floor pan. Oh yeah, it had a manual choke and you had to let the car warm up for about 10 minutes before you tried to go anywhere or it would just stall out on you. The exhaust pipe was a home made cut and welded together job with flex pipe over the rear axle. Fitment was crap so it used to rattle against the body. Wrapped a coat hanger around it and one of the support struts for the rear axle to keep it from knocking and rubbing. And it used to lose a quart of oil every two weeks.

That damn car got me through 3 years of college though and it never left me stranded. The best part, I still have it and I'm gonna make my kids drive it to school! Hahahahahahaha! After I restore it that is. I'm not quite as evil as my old man. It now has a 287 V8 that I dropped in it, I patched the cowel drain hole with a brand new sheet metal panel. Just got a new master cylinder and I'm bending new brake lines for it. Patched up most of the rust holes with fiberglass and bondo. Prepped them with primer so they're ready for paint when I get to that point. Should be a nice car again when I'm done.

Jesus, my first car in high school was a pos 1973 brown ford thunderbird with a 460/4 in it. It sucked major gas but back then it was only 75 cents a gallon.

First car was a 1994 Ford Escort station wagon. Manual transmission. When parents got it new 8+ years before I was driving it, they paid <$10k for it. Now, I'm driving a 2005 Dodge Neon that I bought new in HS when the Escort died. Paying for it all on my own, and should have it paid off this Jan.

A girl I dated in HS got a brand new Ford Mustang fully loaded, and 8 mo later totaled it. They got her another brand new Mustang. Totaled that one 6 months later. Last I knew she was on her 3rd or 4th that her parents got for her. Most of my friends though either inherited cars or paid for their own (some had a bit of parents help, but a big chunk was their own $). That gave them an invested interest in it, and IMHO made them more responsible with their cars.

FWIW, we also did a ton of stupid shit with our cars b/c we didn't care about them. From car sledding in a field in my Escort, to racing our shitty cars to Taco Bell at 4 AM during LAN parties, to my friend putting LEDs in his grille and had them on a strobe setting that made it seem like an undercover cop car and would pull ppl over then pass them, to many other stupid things. Our stupidity was just usually not in stupid things while driving like reaching behind our seat for lip gloss and hitting 3 mailboxes on our way to work (true story from a different chick I knew in HS)....

I went to private school so I saw some pretty obscene things, a kid in the grade behind me had a Viper.

All of my friends and I had nice cars, some of us have parents that treated us well, the real difficulty though maintaining some objectivity and making sure the kids don't let it get to their heads and realize that these things only come as a fruit of hard work. Fortunately none of my friends did which is really nice.
