800 mhz core clock?

Either this card is going to rape the G80

or

R600 has very weak shaders.

Can you imagine an 800mhz 8800GTX?

I think at this point it can just hit higher clockspeeds and might be a bit more energy efficient.

it's more expensive too (at least right now), which is probably why ATI went with GDDR3 assuming these rumors are true.

I don't think so, ATi always had the upper hand in Shaders, and the information surrounding around is saying that even though it has only 64 unified shaders, they are madd4 shaders, not scalar shaders like nVidia, that will means that each shader should be doing as much work as 4 scalar shaders, meaning that 64 madd4 shaders should run as fast as 256 scalar shaders, the G80 currently has only 128 scalar shaders, but that's only rumours, nothing has been confirmed yet. That's why we should take any information of the R600 like a grain of salt.

As long as they can keep the core and shader cores high it will produce some flashy frame rates. What ever happened to the R600 being dual-core as proposed by the Inquirer?

yeah, but you also have to take the speed into account. 256 at 800-- 128 at 1350, granted ATI still has a speed advantage by a couple of hundred mhz, but the way you state it makes it sound like it is 2 to 1

ATI R600 GPU is expected to be released on January 20th on an 80nm process. The R600 is the successor to the R580 core and will be fully DirectX 10 compliant, utilising a Unified Shader Model architecture. Current rumours suggest that R600 will feature 64 Shader pipelines (processing both vertices and pixels) with 32 TMUs and 32 ROPs running at a clock speed of around 800Mhz. R600 is expected to interface to 512MB of 2Ghz+ GDDR4 Memory over a 512-bit interface. R600 is reported to consume up to 250W (twice that of R580) and may require two PCI Express power connectors.

Damn, with it's only 64 madd shaders was able to outperform the G80, now with 8 more rops and tmu, running at 800mhz, :Q

You have benches? Where does it say it's faster? Where does it say what type of pipelines? scalar, vec3, vec4?

quote--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In regards to R600's architecture...I've heard it's going to use vec4's...is that necessarily going to be less efficient than nvidia's scalar design?

reply

if it can be be split up into vec 2 + vec 2 or other combinations it might end up just as effecient. Hard to say at this point

They seem to be suggesting less power usage than previously thought. That would be good news. Now lets get some dx10 games.

For the R600 Release is this for only the ultra high end cards or will we see mainstream cards running at like 200-300$ ?

What???? Apoppin assured us the R600 would consume the same as the G80.
The G80 consumes ~20 watts more than the R580 at load. This thing is going to consume about 100+ more watts at load.

Doubt we will see anything under $400. They will probably come out with an XT and XTX version of it first, then follow up with something around April/May in the midrange. All speculation at this point, but I would highly doubt we see any midrange parts for quite a while after the initial flagship release.

I am pretty excited to see this new card of ATi's. I was origional planning an entire system overhaul, however, if they come out with a decent mid-range card sometime before June, I will just spend $300 or so and save the rest for a future upgrade.

R600 rapes G80. and G80 gives birth to RG800.

I hope they use a different alpha texturing AA mode than their Adaptive AA. It sucks not being able to use it in every game like you can Nvidia's Transparency AA.

AAA's issues are caused by drivers and hence can be fixed, ATi just can't be bothered.
