I fail to see what's so bad about iTunes...most people have no legitimate complaints about it and I chalk it up to "I hate apple" excuses.
My god. Get your head out of Apples ass. Some people don't like the software, why is that so hard for you understand. I personally would like my device to function like a portable HDD and not need any other software installed. No DRM, No cute flashy interface just drag and drop into folders.
When I went to bed yesterday, there were like 4 responses. I didn't expect to cause such a stir. In any case, I am with BroeBo here...at least about the bit about just drag and drop into folders.
I had a bad feeling about itunes and so far its been a major pain.
1) I installed iTunes yesterday. It would not open....kept giving me a crash and error without identifying anything useful. I noticed that in add/remove programs, there were two versions of quicktime. Those nitwits at Apple fail to tell you during the installation that they are going to install quicktime. Had they indicated this during setup, I would have either canceled and uninstalled my old version of quicktime or assumed that the installer would "upgrade" my old version for me. Of course that assumption would have been wrong. The iTunes installer installed the new version of quicktime without getting rid of the old one.
I managed to remove the new version of quicktime, reinstall my old version 6.x of quicktime, then do a complete uninstall of quicktime 6.x to get rid of everything, uninstall itunes, and then finally install itunes again. Great, it finally worked after hours of uninstalling and reinstalling.
I don't understand how a company like Apple that makes such a great product like the ipod screws up the installation. I am surprised that the installer does not check for older versions (not that v 6.x was that old) and either uninstall them or properly upgrade them.
2) The next problem I am having is as follows. Itunes is set to sync. When I copy mp3's off of a cd into the library, I guess itunes makes a copy or syncs it on the ipod. Only problem with the sync settings is that next time I open up iTunes, if the CD with the mp3's is not in the cdrom, I get an error messages that th songs are unavailable to sync.
So I turn off the sync option. I choose "music" under the "ipod" option and try to copy songs from the cd directly to the "music" field. The songs are not copying for some reason.
Can someone help me? All I want to do is copy songs and movies to my ipod. I don't want the sync if it is going to ask me everytime for the source (e.g., CD). I don't store mp3's on my HD for them to be available all the time. The itunes software seems nice but has a lot of quirks. Apple seems like its all eye candy and no substance (at least with this software)
Edit:
I am assuming that if I copy songs to the "music" field under the library, it just going to copy songs to my HD.
