The thing that scares me about those is crashing them...(1) for the money put in, and even moreso (2) the effort put in. It takes a billion hours of careful work to build something that exquisitely detailed...I would be too scared to ever take it off

That was my first thought too. Even if you use the minimum amount of fuel so that if you crash you don't get a fireball, anything that big is going to some damage.

I went searching but it appears that nobody has built an RC model Caspian Sea Monster yet.

Flying an RC B-17 over Austria? How many heart attacks did that cause? They going to take a B-29 over Tokyo next?

I imagine by the time you decide you build something this big and detailed, you've proven your flying ability with lots of hours on the smaller stuff, or maybe already hold a flying license.

Makes me wonder why drug mules are even a thing now. If I were into drug smuggling I would use rc aircraft and or rc submarines. I wonder to what degree these are being used.

Remote aircraft, like their full size counterparts are easy to detect and more expensive than a mule. Some of the richest drug cartels have built home grown subs and submerged boats with driving viewport being the only thing visible at the surface. It's risky, but they are desperate to get their product to market.

Especially with surveillance balloons with radar and IR systems sitting on the border watching to the south, getting a private plane in would be hard.

Knew a guy who knew a guy that happened to at their local airfield...lost control of his jet & killed a bystander. Freak accident.

It's hard to say if they should be banned though. Accidents like that are rare. I've been flying R/C stuff for going on 30 years now, since I was a kid, and I've never seen anyone seriously physically injured. The same can be said about anything, really - I mean, we kill over 35k people a year in the US alone in car accidents, and yet we don't enforce a 20MPH speed limit, you know?

I LOVE reading about those coke sub stories! They're insane!! They call them narco subs:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narco-submarine

They go back as far as 1993:

http://www.businessinsider.com/cartel-narco-submarines-2015-4

They caught one that was 73-feet long and carried $100 million of drugs onboard:

http://www.industrytap.com/multimillion-dollar-subs-engineered-for-drug-running/5824

Some of them have advanced tech like GPS navigation, radar & heat-avoidance systems. They found a 100-footer that could actually dive 30 feet down:

http://www.businessinsider.com/cartel-narco-submarines-2015-4

They're even working on remote-controlled surfboard drones...one just washed up with $100k of drugs onboard:

http://www.theinertia.com/surf/a-mo...ith-100000-full-of-meth-washed-up-in-tijuana/

The lengths that the bad guys will go through to move their product is mindblowing. Breaking Bad was one thing, but it's just crazy what people do IRL...

There was a story maybe a year ago, where some professional RC helicopter pilot chopped off the top of his head with his helo, lost control or something. I'm going to see if I can find the story.
