I was looking at the PF7900 but was told by a viewsonic rep that since it's aperature grille (AG), it wouldn't be good for my needs, which are text/spreadsheets. She also said not to consider any AG model (which I guess are good for graphics-oriented people, or something like that). It's all still gibberish to me....

The Samsung 900NF is a nice monitor with crisp clear text and very good color saturation.

There is one problem though. Some Samsung 900NF monitors suffer from slight geometry "bowing" problems that cannot be adjusted via the on-screen display.

I had to go through 4 different 900NF's before I found one didn't display the annyoing bowing problem that many experience. If you purchase a monitor online you don't have the all important benefit of viewing the monitor for geometry problems and such.

Hmm Rudee, your story sounds strange to me. You are telling me that basically, those 4 units you went through were defective? I don't think so. What i think happened is that on your 5th unit, you must have found the right monitor settings/adjustments to get rid of that "bowing" problem cuz the fact is every new 19" monitor based on the FD trintron technology has some geometry problem and it's just a matter of seeing them.

Some people just don't notice them while others do, which is why there is so many contradictive opnions on every monitor.

You're looking for text viewing mostly? A shadow mask monitor generally has crisper text than a AG monitor like the rest mentioned. A good one is the Samsung 900IFT. That is around $410 with free shipping from Onvia. If you are really on a budget, there is the Samsung 955DF. That might run around $330 but the refresh rates are pretty bad though the text quality SHOULD be the same as the 900IFT.

I think Hitachi makes some pretty good shadow mask monitors. The CM715 and CM775 (?) come to mind...

I'm very pleased with the Samsung 955DF. Text is razor sharp! The more I use it the more I LOVE it!

My Viewsonic PF790 is a bit fuzzy for text and has a sag in the upper RH corner. I think it may have been dropped a few times in shipping. If they all have this fuzziness,they aren't quite worth the premium price. I'm also using a TNT2 which may have an affect on the 2D aspect.
Maybe the Samsung900ITF.

Sony Trinitrons, all my computers use Trinitrons (excluding my laptop) and I love them. The Multiscan 210GS is a great monitor, it's only 17", but they come in bigger sizes. It's an AG (at .25 mm), but the text is still crisp (in 10x7), and graphics are great too.

I know all about that annoying bowing problem. And out of the box my 4th 900NF warmed up to a excellent display with virtually no bow. It was much much better than my previous 3.
