Somebody ripped off my credit card and used it at the Speedway in Alsip Illinois.

They'd still get the fee if they bumped up their security, they're just increase their profits as well.
the current thought is their profit wouldn't go up as much as increased security would cost. Credit is a tiered business and the top tier already has better security.

Any kind of credit is abstracted, and there'll always be risk. Too many fingers in the pie. I prefer the simplicity of cash. You give me stuff, I give you money. You can try to take it, I'll defend. Straightforward and neat. Doesn't get more fair than that.
Are you my Dad?

I agree unless you need to rent a car or hotel room. Pops told the local bank to give him his $35K in cash, immediately, because they wouldn't give him a $300 credit card (had zero credit at 70).. They just about shit. He looked like a guy that should be on a watch list....@lxskllr esk? They relented. Anyway, 6 months later, they gave my Mom a $750 card.

Yeah more places are doing that, but not enough. And I think I will just start using cash when possible. The thing is, a tank of gas usually costs me about 50 bucks these days. So I'd need to withdraw maybe 200 and keep a special gasoline envelope with me at all times.
One reason to roll the minorities.

You're looking good.

But it's not even new technology! The rest of the world has been using it for decades!

If you have a branded debit card (Visa etc.) run it as a credit card. There are built in protections.

I had a card hit for a few grand for Malaysia Airlines tickets out of Kuala Lumpur. That was the biggest fraud I’ve had. Makes me laugh when it’s $25-45.

I prefer getting thousands of dollars in free flights to paying with cash.

But maybe that's just me.

In some countries I've seen the waiters walk around with CC readers and swipe the card right at the table so it doesn't leave the sight of the diners.

Most countries do that since they do Chip+PIN so you need to enter that on the reader for them

But it's not even new technology! The rest of the world has been using it for decades!

It's been a few years since I read about it but one of the reasons is that the US has orders of magnitude more credit cards than anywhere else. As in we lose more credit cards per year than the entire EU issues in a year. There is also a marked increase in cost for terminals and cards. In one article it was mentioned the price would go from $0.01/ card to $0.10. May not sound like a lot but the US has over 1.2Bn issued credit cards and over 10M-15M terminals. The cost to change all that is around $8bn dollars with a higher on going cost for credit card replacement. So the fraud prevented by the more secure systems needs to be greater than that. And it still doesn't go away completely. Credit card fraud outside the US is a pretty steady $0.04 per $100 swiped since 2003. The US cost is around $0.15 per $100.

There are also concerns about barriers to entry to credit card use. We have so many cards will we remember the right PIN to go with the right card when the time comes? Or will we default to the tried and true card we know the PIN for, making it harder for companies to get their foot in the door. Or do we make it so people can set their PIN and now someone has the same PIN across 6 cards?

Back in the 90's I had my CC info take a walk. Noticed some strange charges called the CC company and they nuked the charges.

What I didn't know is that in addition to the charges someone registered a warez domain in my name.

A year later I got a call from some software protection agency telling me to take my website down or they will take me to court.

Wait what! Web Site?

A year or so later some register sends me a letter asking for payment to continue my registration.

Had someone buy $299.97 worth of gas in Florida (I live in Oregon) several years ago using my USAA card. They alerted me and sent me a new card. Only time that's happened (fingers crossed).

To help avoid fraud at the gas pumps. If I goto Mobile gas station either use more mobile speedpass or the mobile speedpass app on my phone. Same with Shell gas station. I can use my bank account quick pay app to activate the pump and pay.

So your card got hacked at Maryland, and got used in Alsip, IL. How'd they do that without a physical card, make a copy?
That gas station is 7.7 miles (16 minute drive) NW from where I live.

Had this happen twice. Hackers get CC info and sell it to bad guys who have the technology and equipment to make a card then turn around and use or sell them to other bad guys.

I’ve experienced CC fraud 20+ times since I started buying stuff online when hot deals started in ~2000. You name the scenario and I’ve had to deal with it.

Someone tried buying $2500 worth of stuff at a home improvement store in Brazil once. Oddly enough the other couple times my card has been compromised the fraudulent transactions happened at Walgreens.

What assault knife do you carry?
If I'm at work, and/or coming/going, I have both of these on my my belt...

If I'm not working, I have one of these in my pocket. Which depends on what falls in my hand first, or expected activity...

Plus I always have a couple multitools, and pocket knives that aren't so good for face stabbing :^P

Waiting on the phone right now for Navy Federal to deal with it.

Yeah, after having my bank card stolen twice, I stopped using it in public. We have a his & hers American Express Serve card (reloadable debit account, separate for each person - basically an allowance card that can be setup for auto-withdrawls from your bank account), plus a shared credit card for emergencies, groceries, gas, etc. Bank account is setup for auto-pay for bills, and nothing else, so monitoring all of the accounts is super easy. Dealing with a credit card company when your number gets stolen is sooooooo much easier than the bank!

Last year I discovered that one of my credit cards had been used to purchase a wide variety of different things, including sushi, in a town near me. Turns out it was an employee of my dentist, the person who took my credit card info when I paid the bill. The police told me that she had done this to at least 25 other patients. My dentist was so embarrassed, he didn't charge me for my next cleaning and x-rays.

She racked up over $40K in charges on people's cards. Was apparently caught because of my case. I had used an HSA credit card to pay for the dentistry and that was the only place I had used that card in months. She is now in prison.
