It was a really uncomfortable situation. It was a woman in her 60s that got hired here last semester as a Programmer. Straight away, it was pretty obvious that she wasn't as sharp as she should be. She was a pretty nice lady, I guess. I've helped her a few times when she first got hired.

After about a month or two working here, I started to hear chatter from the other guys about wondering how she got a programming job despite not knowing certain things. I just came back from Christmas Break today and they gave her the boot while I was in the IT Support office working alone.

They called me to come and lock her out of our system and to confiscate all of her gadgets and to nuke her HDDs, etc.

Well, I felt a little uncomfortable because she was still there when I came to get her stuff and she was VERY upset and it was kind of hard trying to get everything back from her......I mean, I was practically unplugging and packing up all her things as she was packing up her little box whilst crying and carrying on. They eventually had to put her out.

When I finally got out of there, I had to go on lunch because I was so stressed.

That was my first time experiencing something like that.

That was handled terribly by your HR / management.

Our course of action is when the individual is pulled away to be terminated, IT is disabling all logins as well as stripping their desk of the companies technology. We'll remove partnerships from Exchange as well, but generally the account disabling will take care of this. Then the person is escorted from the building and their manager will pack their desk to have a courier deliver to them.

You should have waited till she was gone at least.

I was told to do it then and there. I really didn't want to do it like that. But she actually had some of the items and I had to make sure everything was accounted for and checked back in our Inventory database.

At one point, I had crawled under her desk and unplugged her computer and loaded it onto a cart while she just stood there. I felt so small at that moment, I could have cried too.

The office is completely empty now.

Right? ...lol

Clearly this was 1 of your 1st times dealing with something like this.

She should have been fired if she couldn't have done what she said she could. HR, managers, team leads, etc. should have screened her better. Boohoo. :'(

Yeah, really poor form by HR.

I had to fire two people a few months ago; grabbed them right as they walked in (was two different days, about a week apart) and took them to a conference room with an HR representative. Did the deed, then gave them the documentation they need, a taxi voucher to get home, and told them they could either come in on a weekend with supervision to get the rest of their stuff or have it couriered to them. HR escorted them out and that was that.

After that just had to send an e-mail to an HR contact group and they disable everything on their accounts before they are even out of the building.

Never fun to fire people, but it went about as well as it could.

HR should have the list and request everything from them. We have everything itemized in their termination letter, so when they sign that to get their severance, it indicates they must return everything on the list first.

I've been in that situation. It totally sucks because there's nothing you can do or say to rectify the situation. All you can do is squirm.

Once I had to install some wireless access points in a local mosque. After the installation, I had to go around to all the offices and set up their wireless connection on their workstations. The last office was the imam (who apparently is the head-honcho of the Islam congregation), and while I was working in the back of the office, he had a family come in to talk about taking their sick mother off of life support. The imam informed them that it is "not the word of God" to keep her alive on life support if she had no chance of healing. The whole family started sobbing and throwing themselves on the floor...and they were blocking the door.

Here I am, the dorky computer guy, stuck in the back room with the door blocked. I had to sit there and pretend I wasn't paying attention to this poor family's very emotional moment.

You monster, clearly in that moment of vulnerability, they needed some privacy to grieve and there you are sitting there with your thumb up your ass. You should be ashamed!

I'm just pulling your chain

That's just it...the imam guy actually said before talking to this family "Just ignore the gentleman back there, he's doing something important for us..."

I was trapped

Where on campus do you work? AIS or ATS can be brutal sometimes.

Don't know if I should say :|

This is exactly how I felt, except the table was pushed up against me so that I couldn't slip away.

It just sucks because they decided to fire her at the end of the workday. I would be so embarrassed, just let me go first thing in the morning so that it doesn't happen while everyone is around...

It happens all the time in software development. I've been in the field for 12 years now. It's not easy, but it's something I have gotten use to. Happened last month and the month before where I work. I'm always waiting for my time to come.

It's too bad that she got so upset that they "had to put her out". May she rest in peace.

I don't know why I giggled....

I got fired for the first time ever over a year ago. I was between jobs and took some shitty gig at a Coffee Shop, they were not paying well and had me doing all sorts of things. To top it off, my Boss was really mean and would talk down to me on a regular basis. She was teaching me how to use the fancy French press Machine and I didn't do it right, so she started getting loud with me.

One morning, I finally asked her kindly to be more respectful. The next morning her boss called me into the office and told me they were letting me go. I kind of just stood there and nodded, on the inside I couldn't have been happier because I didn't want to wait two weeks before I could be off the job if I quit. NOBODY knew she fired me and it was a lot easier to just walk out like I normally do and say "See you guys later!".

The next day, I got the IT job I am working right now...in retrospect, it was the best thing that ever happened to me.

Yep, shitty place/people to work for no doubt. Let her voluntarily leave the workplace and do the cleanup when she is gone. D:
Can't believe they didn't do a proper screening.

Well, I don't know what the nature of her firing was or what finally led to it or anything.

I love my job, just a little upset about how it went down.
