It was a really uncomfortable situation. It was a woman in her 60s that got hired here last semester as a Programmer. Straight away, it was pretty obvious that she wasn't as sharp as she should be. She was a pretty nice lady, I guess. I've helped her a few times when she first got hired.

After about a month or two working here, I started to hear chatter from the other guys about wondering how she got a programming job despite not knowing certain things. I just came back from Christmas Break today and they gave her the boot while I was in the IT Support office working alone.

They called me to come and lock her out of our system and to confiscate all of her gadgets and to nuke her HDDs, etc.

Well, I felt a little uncomfortable because she was still there when I came to get her stuff and she was VERY upset and it was kind of hard trying to get everything back from her......I mean, I was practically unplugging and packing up all her things as she was packing up her little box whilst crying and carrying on. They eventually had to put her out.

When I finally got out of there, I had to go on lunch because I was so stressed.

That was my first time experiencing something like that.

Sounds like you work in an academic environment. You don't have to say what institution but I'm curious are you a student worker or are you a university employee with benefits?

Most institutions have a standard probationary period. Could be 90 days. Could be six months. Do you know how long is the probationary period is at your institution?

The reason that I ask is that there is a difference between not making it off probation and getting fired. For example, at most institutions someone on probation can be dismissed without a specific reason.

In contrast, your institution's employee manual probably outlines a long and complex process for firing an employee. (Employee must be consoled. Employee has right to appeal. Employee must be evaluated. Employee can challenge evaluation...)

At any institution that I have worked at, you would not have been allowed to access her office while she was still there. (You could disable her password though...) Normally, the supervisor would be responsible for recovering any of the institution's gear... Just curious, did they have you make a forensic copy of her HD before you nuked it?

When I worked in the computer industry, all layoffs were on a Friday. All took place between 8 a.m. and noon. Employee would meet with supervisor and HR person. Sometimes a guard would escort employee back to office. Employee clears out desk and is gone by noon....

Situations like this always suck...

Best of luck,
Uno

Most likely they had to gather enough evidence that she was incompetent at her job to back their firing before they let her go... Lawsuits a plenty... especially since she's old... and could sue claiming discrimination/wrongfully terminated etc.

I'm just a student. I don't know what their policies are...but I DO know that she started working here ~4 months ago because It was me who gave her all those gadgets and setup her stuff in the first place. My probationary period was 90 days, though.

Also, I did NOT nuke her files today. Since this happened at the end of the day, I just locked her things away in a cabinet and will sort it out soon.

FWIW, I have been absent from work for nearly a month for break...so I do not know about what happened before I came back today.

Shens. Report back when you have someone with access to your network/income.

The process of hiring and firing is totally owned by management. It is their job and not to be delegated either directly or indirectly because they are too busy, can't be bothered or, the situation makes them uncomfortable. Report back to me when you've learned responsibility for your position.

I'm thinking of all the different ways it could have been handled... but that sucks being hired into a job and being fired after ~4 months.

I didn't even know she was hired in as a Programmer until people started talking about her in the office, I thought she was just a guest instructor or something.

For you, this has the potential to be a valuable learning experience. In my opinion, personnel decisions are some of the most significant and most difficult decisions that an organization can make.

I'm suspecting that your institution, and/or your supervisor, lacks experience with these types of decisions. When these decisions are handled badly, as they frequently are, it can have a negative effect on an organization's morale.

Experience will serve you well in your career. While, its good to have positive experiences, you can also learn from negative experiences.

Best of luck,
Uno

Your HR can go F itself. Normally when somebody is let go they are immediately "dead to the company", i.e. you never see nor hear from them ever again. Having it happen and letting them do their stuff while having IT grab their gear is hilariously awful in execution.

I hope she sues your company for age discrimination.

Did your company do everything it could to provide her with the necessary training needed to do her job after hiring her?

Wow that's pretty bad. Normally what happens here is the person gets called away, then you don't see them anymore. Security escorts them to their car and their stuff is mailed home.

Coding error ? I work in prod support you should see how many defects we have and how many things are not implemented by project teams by the time they are in production. If a mistake is made you are found and allowed to fix the defect.

If they find you incompetent at some stuff you get demoted to another team or project. In extreme cases say you screed up someone's assets for good yea you would be gone.

The weird thing is they hire contractors on the spot with just a tech lead phone interview while a full time employee has to go through a grueling 3 hour interview with managers that don't really ask technical things, just ask about projects, coding, and bunch of behavioral questions or team work issues. The first time I applied with the company for an internship while in school I was turned down.

I applied again for the same internship a year later and HR asked me to go for the actual full time developer position which I did get.

Hell I've made some mistakes in code but they are caught in test regions which I get to fix. Then again learning a huge system is not easy when you have been there only 1 year and you are working on 5-6 applications at one time. So it's not like here's our website/app this is it nothing will be different. Every defect I fix is like wtf is this ?

She got hired in as a Programmer, perhaps training wasn't offered with the job...but she must have known something because she got it. Perhaps the person who hired her was fired too. It had nothing to do with her age. There were signs she didn't know what the hell she was doing. Like when she wanted her access codes changed because she couldn't remember and then frantically called the next day because she couldn't log in to anything and did not know that changing the access code meant she changed the damn access code..

There were some other things that were experienced by other people that I can't comment on in particular because I've only overheard about it

She can't sue for age discrimination unless she has proof it was her age that lost her the job.

Hmm. I know a few people that lost jobs this week. I think employers do it at the beginning of the year for some tax / accounting / legal reason.

Very unprofessional. Very.

You should let someone go on a Friday at the end of the day, give them their paycheck, walk them to the door, and wish them the best of luck.
