Someone just came by and turned the power to my house off

I was up in the loft on my PC and heard a loud "bang". Almost like the transformer blew. I immediately looked out of the window and the transformer seemed fine. I went outside and saw that the power panel was open and the main power breaker was flipped to off. As i saw that i saw a car speed off. My initial thought was the power company turned it off and i thought the guy was a worker for them. Turned out it seems like it was a prank. Anyone ever hear of this?

Edit: yes i have since put a lock on the panel

Update: Put this on my electric box. Good luck cutting that f'ers!

Yes always.

I called the cops to report it and the cop came out and took the complaint. He told me that he's never heard of this before but will patrol the area. Kinda freaked out atm...

yeah, its located on the side of the house in front of the gate. You think this is something i should be concerned about? Like my house is getting targeted?

I've never heard of it, but I am not the most knowledgeable about what kids do for pranks these days.

You guys think its just a prank though? Not someone trying to target my house?

if the panel is actualy outside i don't see why that woudn't be a standard prank in that area. lived in many states though and have never seen an outdoor residential power panel.

Have you made any enemies that would be stupid and immature enough to do such a thing?

Did you piss of your children or the neighbors kids or something?

I don't think it is anyone trying to rob you or anything, so if it was done maliciously it was probably just a petty grudge.

Oh yeah, now that you mention it, the area I lived it had it inside. Maybe that is why it wasn't a prank...

An attack would only result in if they hated you back. Otherwise, null hypothesis.

This act is very immature and the first time I have heard of such a prank. Imagine someone with a deep freeze and it defrosting due to the power loss while the occupant is away...

This used to happen to me a number of years ago in an apartment, some stupid kids of some tenants would hit the apartment breakers in the laundry rooms, until they pissed off a few too many tenants and were tracked down and spoken with.

I've never heard of a breaker box being outside. Wouldn't that be dangerous due to water intrusion? I'm betting it's against code in any case.

not when you live in the desert I suppose. Talked to a guy I work with and he told me it happened to him also.

There's always at least a switch. That's how the power company turns on and off your power.

the breakers are inside and outside in the phx, az area. in condos/apts, usually the main breaker is outside and then the breaker box w/ the rooms, a/c and other breakers are inside, houses in some areas have the whole breaker outside - nothing new and nothing i would be worried about - typical prank. put a small lock on it and they will hit the next house that doesn't have a lock on it - just a small one is all that is needed - just kids f*cking around. about 20yrs or maybe longer my dumbass sister did it to one of our neighbors and turned off the kitchen, the people were on vacation and it was summer, so all the food in their fridge became a science experiment.

right outside my window is the main power into our condo building, i think this meter array feeds 4 condos for their main power - no lock. the meter readers have to have access to meters so they can come and see the numbers.

i see this also on new developments, so if it is against code, i would say at least 75% of phx, az homes are out of code. in fact, on a standalone house, i have always seen them on the outside from houses built in 50s to houses built last year.

the ones i have seen the "lid" lifts up - what you heard was probably it banging back down as the kids ran to the car.

All of my switches are inside the house. The power company turns it off at the meter. Apparently outside panels are common but I've never seen them.

The townhouses down the street have all their main power switches in clusters on the outside. I could turn off the whole neighborhood in a couple minutes if I wanted to.

You know what else is funny? A paintball in the back of the head.

Also, I am quoting this just in case he changes it later.
