anyone?

I need a couple basic cookbooks... I'm a total noob at cooking and pretty much anything beyond "combine A and B and stick it in the oven for X amount of time" is over my head

but I'm determined I'm going to start eating healthier, cooking more, and getting take-out less so that I can take the money I'm saving and putting it into my grad school fund.

I use "Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book" and "Pillsbury Complete Cookbook." Prefer the latter as its easier to find stuff in, but both are standards (along with Joys of Cooking). Can't go wrong with any of them, find cheapest on Amazon...they also have a cool section on what you can replace stuff with, like if you don't have shortening, how much butter to use, ratio of dry to fresh herbs, etc. I also have a cookbook devoted to how to cook meat (500+ pages of awesomeness) that my fiancee got me for Christmas (long with digital meat thermometer) and one I got at a silent auction by Rachel Ray for $2-3.

Most get used in a given month, but I generally have 10-12 dishes or so I rotate among or vary a bit. But you'll learn fast if you just promise yourself to cook something NEW each week. Things you like will get repeated, cruddy or hard to make dishes likely won't.

G'luck!

I will second Fannie Farmer. It is a "must have" for any American kitchen. All other cookbooks are inferior. For additional cookbooks, I suggest visiting a bookstore and picking out titles you like then ordering on the internet.

As a recently new wife and as someone who never really had to cook for anyone (aside from the occasional side dish for a party) I HIGHLY reccommend The Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook! It has been the positively most useful tool in the kitchen! The insturctions are wonderful and it has great tips and general information.
