ooops, no stock

That's more like it , regarding the usb powering of the 2.5 drives. That one has 2 usb plugs on order to get double the power 500ma x2, which is in line with the power consumption of the large 7200rpm 2.5"hdds.

Personally I would stay away from usb powered ones. I once had a usb powered 2.5 enclosure that would power up some drives a some others not, plus some drives exceed the 500ma current specification of the usb bus.

For these type of things I really say that they are made from the same factory and rebranded by companies who buy them

For $2 shipping go for it. Anyone know if this unit will work with a dos usb driver? My current one won't work with any of the 5 or so usb dos drivers. Thats 20 hours down the drain.

I have the one from Geeks.com

it is the cheapest and works fine. I have never experienced any problems! Had it over 2 years now

i don't see why that wouldn't work

And I didn't see any reason why either...but considered that I might be overlooking something.

I never knew these existed. They would be super handy when you needed them...

Now... will I ever need one?

Need one more variety? eSATA (External SATA)?

More shielding added so SATA can go external?

Gonna' finally move the HDs outta' the PC's box?

We both know it's not a question of whether or not you actually *need* one

My thoughts exactly. If they still had the $1.99 flat rate shipping I'd bite, but since I have the 2.5" and 3.5" adapter already I cannot justify buying another for SATA at this point.

There are two different hard drives I'd like to be able to connect (not at the same time), and the best way I know to get them connected:
ATA/IDE 2.5" internal laptop drive - Geeks through USB 2.0 at 480Mbps
SATA II 3.5" internal desktop drive - Vantech through eSATA at 3Gbps (eSATA supporting motherboard); Vantech or Geeks through USB 2.0 at 480Mbps

Can anyone verify that my understanding is correct?

Does anyone know of an adaptor that will function like the Vantech enclosure?

Is extending a cable from a SATA II motherboard port outside of the case to connect stuff bad? One eSATA port is an option on the P5B MB I'm looking at, but I want to make sure so I don't try to be creative and ruin something.

I'm in for one.

I like, and I highly recommend NewerTech products - great support & documentation.

Used their products for years... Always ultra satisified.

Thanks Kaido, Great find!

I got the geeks one and it is slick. It can boot the pc from cd or 3 1/2"ide. Didn't test 2 1/2" or sata yet. Runs great will boot to usb 2.0 for MB that supports it. Also you can boot dos floppy or cd from motherboard and also get to devices on the cable. Never thought of plugging 2 different ones at once. Sounds crazy. I'll try it later
I have an older ide only to usb cable and it cannot boot from usb so be careful becuase its an outstanding feature to have.

Add a SATA to eSATA cord for higher speed options for the right hardware situation.

But for those of you like me who would be tempted to use this for a regular external drive, here's a note from the manual:
"Before using this device with any of your storage devices, please be aware that this product is designed to be used in a temporary situation. This adapter does not use any drive enclosure to protect the drive mechanism from damage due to electrostatic discharge. We highly recommend placing the drive mechanism on a static safe work surface, one that you may have readily available would be a mousepad. Turn the mousepad over so that its rubber bottom surface is able to be placed underneath the drive you are attaching."

*NOTE: I added an off topic post to the appropriate forum section to get into this.

When using a 2.5" laptop drive with the Geeks tool, do you draw power from the USB, or is there some way to connect the power cord to the adaptor?

That, and the two piece power supply would be the only advantages I see for the Newer Tech tool.

Is this backwards compatible with usb 1.1? I'd like to get one of these to use on my laptop until my power supply comes back from RMA but my laptop is old, p3 700 with 1 usb slot.

The Vantech has a SATA header for people who don't have MB's with eSATA ports on them, which is most people. So you wouldn't have to run the SATA cable from your MB outside your case. Just to the bracket, then run a SATA cable from the encloser to the bracket. 30 bucks is a awesome price for that. It's a very well built unit, I want to order it myself.

I can't imagine there being any reason why running a SATA cable from your case to an external SATA encloser would be harmful, I am plenty PC Ghetto and it sounds along the lines of a "mod" I would attempt
