What a horrable tragedy And this will throw back the spaceprograms and the spacestation will be halted for quite some time I guess

This is really terrible and just a few days after the challenger catastrophy

I was visiting a Flight Service Station this morning which provides pilot weather briefings... they were showing loops of the radar coverage where the shuttle broke up. I was also there when they issued a SIGMET, which is a warning for all aircraft in the area, for shuttle debris. Hours later it's still moving to the east at about 35 knots.

omg, this is so sad. I hope the crew had a quick death and didn't have to suffer.

The first manned mission to Mars should drop off a plaque or similar memorial dedicated to people of every nationality who gave their lives during space exploration...maybe a list of their names, that would be cool.

Also, I haven't read this entire thread so my apologies if this has been pointed out...but has anyone else noticed that all three of NASA's major disasters (Columbia, Challenger, and Apollo-1) occurred within the same week? Freakish.

I am very saddened by these events. The courage of these astronauts is amazing. People should realize that the ultimate sacrifice was given for all the people of the world to expand our horizons. I still believe the future of mankind is in outer space. If we allow this tragic event to bring a halt to the space program, then these people may have died in vain. I am sure that they would want us to keep pushing ahead. Safety first, a thorough investigation must come before any further missions, of course. The cost is very high for space exploration, but the crew of the Challenger and Columbia thought it was worth it. God have mercy on their souls, and condolences for the families.

I rather like the one we left on the moon during Apollo 11:

Here men from the planet Earth
first set foot upon the Moon
July 1969, A.D.
We came in peace for all mankind

Almost unbelievable.

Over here in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area the electronic highway traffic signs all read something to the effect of, "If you find a piece of Space shuttle material, call the police or 281-xxx-xxxx."

It is just really odd actually reading a sign saying that and makes it almost surreal; like some strange movie.

Also, on another thought, not to trvialize the tragedy but it seems like overall NASA has a pretty good record. Between Apollo-1, Challanger, and Columbia over like 35 years or so and taking into prespective that they are doing possibly the most dangerous thing imaginable; only 3 fatal accidents is amazing.
Again, it is such a tragedy but to be calculating it seems like statistics just finally caught up to them. If it wasn't this flight, it may have been the next one.

Hopefully, though, they will be able to learn from this disastor and eliminate any possibility of this particular situation occuring again.

So, when will all the moronic dipshits start to somehow tie this international disastor to Bush? :disgust:

Footage on CBS11 here in the D/FW viewing area has reported charred body remains found, location unclear. Television footage has found a charred astronaut's helmut lying in a cemetary- that's where it hits home.

What a truly horrible thing to have happen. When I heard the news, I flashed back to when I was 6 years old, and even at that age I knew what a tragedy the Challenger accident had been. I knew that the crew was dead, and a school teacher died along with the crew. My mother was a teacher, and it hit me really hard to realize that her students had been watching the launch, and that their teacher would never come back.

This morning all I could thing was "Good Lord, not again...".
