During a mission status news conference yesterday, Entry Flight Director Leroy Cain was asked about any possible damage to the shuttle's thermal tiles during launch. The tiles are what protect the shuttle during the fiery reentry into Earth's atmosphere.

Tracking video of launch shows what appears to be a piece of foam insulation from the shuttle's external tank falling away during ascent and hitting the shuttle's left wing near its leading edge.

But Cain said engineers "took a very thorough look at the situation with the tile on the left wing and we have no concerns whatsoever. We haven't changed anything with respect to our trajectory design. It will be a nominal, standard trajectory."
Well damn....

Not to be a naysayer, but they were 200,000 feet up. Not much chance for survival.

Ill never forget when the challenger was destroyed. I was in elementary school (3rd grade i think) and our teacher came and got us during lunch and told us that 20 minutes earlier it had blown up. the memory has stuck with me so clearly even til this day.

I hope not. Although still classified information, there are many experts that claim the Challenger crew could have survived until impact with the water. Two full minutes to contemplate your fate.....

I guess...but I just don't imagine anything coming down with significant size.

very clearly.

This will be without a doubt the beginning of the end for the shuttle. It is 25 years and is in bad need of replacement.

I have read the reports transcripts. I do not know if they were real or not however.

I agree. Let's not jump to conclusions, especially about the cause, because you know that takes time to research. Right now, let's look for the shuttle/crew. Let's see if its the worst.

I was in High School, and I believe we were in History class, and we had TV carts that we could watch programming. I was watching it live on TV when it exploded. My heart sank watching columbia

Just showed some pictures on CNN taken by an amatuer photographer. One of the pictures sure looks like some kind of explosion took place.

At those speeds and temperatures, if one thing fails on reentry, a chain reaction starts and the item of reentry just starts tearing apart...
