I got my Samsung today. I used the Mastercard, and put in MC Exclusives in the comments box (not the coupon spot) and got the 10% off! Made it $53.10 for the DVD Drive! Looks good too.

OK, I finally got my CompGeek DVD drives today. I ordered 2 drives, both of them SD-1212 6x/32x Toshiba DVD-ROM drives. However, CompGeeks mistakenly sent me an older SD-1210 model drive (4.8x/32x DVD-ROM) drive instead of the promised SD-1202 model. Very dissapointing. Especially seeing how they totally screwed up some of the people on the other thread concerning the AHA-2940 cards (AHA-2940 Thread).

Can these people get their orders straight? Such a hassle--very annoying. I'm gonna bitch at them tomorrow.

In any case, the correct SD-1212 drive turned out to have both analog and digital out (SPDIF) connectors. It had ROM version 1R22 v2, making it REGION FREE, which is a very nice feature. Manufactured Sept, 1999 and looked like a new pull (a little bit dirty). Came with an audio connector. I will try this sucker out and report back. I think that it is still available...if they can get the model number right.

i thought regional coding was not something programmed into the dvd rom drives themselves but into dvd decoding software and hardware. Wouldnt it be kind of silly to spend more money installing regional coding into hardware that may never see a dvd movie disc? Whereas putting the regional coding into the decoder makes sense because its only purpose is to decode movies.

Since region limitations in both decoders and software has been defeated, they went to the drive itself-RPC2...some have hacks available. LOL!

Check out this that makes DVD software decoders region free: DVD Region Killer. There is also DVD Genie as well. DVD Region Killer acts to intercept calls from the software to check on the region status of the player. This only works with region free players, though.

BTW, the Toshiba DVD-ROM drives are highly recommended by CloneCD for their ability to read hidden tracks. This can be a useful function.

Actually, I only have region 1 DVDs, but I use Remote Selector to defeat Macrovision. I never used any others. Tom Pabst has a good DVD mpeg2 to mpeg4 burn on CDR art., which I still have to read.
