Sonex Acoustic Foam

I noticed that 2cooltek has this foam and was wondering if it actually worked. The description of the stuff said that it worked good for higher pitched sounds, like whirring fans(in the deltas case, screaming fans). I have tried dynamat before, but noticed a little bit of a decrease in noise. That was in an enlight 7237. I have a lian-li pc60 now and a louder fan(delta) coming. I am kind of skeptical about it. Anybody have any input?

1" is too thick for full coverage in most midtowers. If you're serious about reducing noise, you need both a vibration dampening layer and a sound absorbing layer. 18x64 for $9! Thats about a 300% markup from what anyone can buy direct.

I'd suggest you find a local place to buy some thick neoprene.. it should work on a similar level with the sonex foam because neoprene is heavier but Sonex is specifically designed to deaden sound so I couldn't be sure.. I saw they sell some neoprene there but the costs I've seen elsewhere for neoprene are around $3 a square foot..

That pocafoam would be interesting to use. Probably make a better heatsink than case lining.

My thing with neoprene is that i know that stuff gets hot. On 2cools board, he says the sonex stuff works better. Only found one thread talking about it over there. I think i might get some and try it out in another case and see if it makes any difference, but i wont be able to for another month.

My concern with neoprene is that if would act as an insulator and result in more heat being trapped.

Sure the neoprene would hold more heat in, but 1" sounds awful wide, and it could get rather expensive to quite my Supermicro 760a

It would cost roughly $30 for a normal midtower. Dethedrus, if you used dynomat, it would cost closer to $100. The one inch thick part is disturbing.

Agreed.

It's funny... I just "rebuilt" my system, changing out all the IDE and floppy cables for machine rounded ones, as well as cleaning all the fan enclosures, fans and the case in general. Lastly, I installed my shiny new SK6 (freshly lapped to 2000) and when I turned it back on... I was disappointed by the noise level.

I didn't think it would drop much (I swapped out a few older louder 80mm fans for quieter ones and put a filter on that damn Delta 38cfm) but it's still damn loud.

Therefore, I plan on swapping out most of my 80mm and 92mm fans for Panaflos, and possibly even upgrading to 120mm in a few spots (thanks to my nice new Dremel), and last but not least, some sort of "deadening" insulation.

I've just go to decide if Dynamat, neoprene or this new foam is the way to go...

The one thing that is promising about it is you have to hold a blow torch up against it for it to catch and it is not static. Its just getting the stuff to fit in the case. I cant remember who, but they made a muffler for their delta. My delta just came in and i thought my case was loud before. Wow. I'll see if i can find that thread again, it was pretty recent. He said it was a major improvement.
