I threw up in my mouth a little

I can appreciate that. However, I'm a sucker for pop music, so I like Limp Bizkit's version a lot better than The Who's. I like how they do the guitar, effects, and vocals and how they give it an edgier, more modern sound. Also, I'm not hung up on history or originality. If I think someone did it better the original artist, I'm okay with that and I'm not embarrassed to say so. Like with Trent Reznor's "Hurt" song - I think Johnny Cash not only did it better, but did it WAY better and totally transformed the song with his voice and the emotion he put into it.

A lot of people really like the original versions of songs and like to tie the original performance to their like or dislike of the song, but I really only care about how it sounds and not how it was done or who did it first, so the history doesn't matter to me nearly as much as how the song sounds. My bottom line is that I really only care about how the music sounds. I can appreciate that you may like The Who and their original version of Behind Blue Eyes, but I can also appreciate Limp Bizkit's cover and personally like how it sounds a lot more.

Van Canto - Master of Puppets

Not that it's "better", but it's one of those novelty things you'll only find on the internet. They tout themselves as an a capella metal band, where instruments (except for drums) are just people singing.

sidenote: They have original tracks, and their most famous is probably Wishmaster, which is probably only popular because of http://www.riddlydiddly.com/ If you're wondering, I stumbled on that page and that's how I found out about all this.

The best covers are the ones that are so ubiquitous that most people don't even know they're covers.

Clapton with I Shot the Sheriff, After Midnight and Cocaine
Elvis with Blue Suede Shoes
Allman Brothers with Statesboro Blues
One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer by Thorogood
Aretha Franklin with Respect

I was just about to post Watchtower when I saw it wasn't on the first page.

It's such an epic difference, it's unreal. One of my favorite songs/performances, for sure.
Bear McCreary's cover for the Battlestar Galactica soundtrack ain't half bad either. I actually set out to listen to it on occasion - perhaps it's simply a "nostalgia" thing, but I enjoy it.

Get Sleazy - Ben Folds Five (originally by Keisha)

I don't like the original "song" at all. Ben Folds actually turned it into music.

there are many epic fails in this thread. However, what's best is personally subjective. So here I go:

Cum on Feel The Noize - Quiet Riot

Mr Tambourine Man - The Byrds

Istanbul (Not Constantinople) - They Might Be Giants

Angel of The Morning - Juice Newton

Venus - Bananarama

When The Levee Breaks - Led Zepplin
