On a side note, the American Dream is nothing more than smoke and mirrors. Many aspire to it, but few succeed. The truth is that most money is already tied up by the wealthy and they aren't going to give it up without a revolution.

The vast majority achieve the American Dream. The American Dream is not wealth, it is individuality and the right to own property. Most will own their own houses and live largely free lives (although that freedom is rapidly declining).

This is exactly what Meloncamp ridicules in Pink Houses. He seems to think that middle class people shouldn't be happy with what they have. Shouldn't be proud of what they have achieved. It also pulls the old tired class envy card.
