I can't believe people are actually suggesting "Last Kiss" as a good cover. That thing boils my blood - a terrible disgrace to the original.

"In my eyes" and "How I Could Just Kill a Man" by RATM were definately better than the originals.

What about "The House of the Rising Sun" by the animals. (dylan originally?)

Nirvana "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" originally by leadbelly.
Nirvana "Lake of fire" originally by the Meat puppets.
Sublime "Smoke two joints" originally by the Toys.
Sublime "Rivers of Babylon" acoustic (originally by?).
Pennywise "Minor Threat" originally by Minor Threat.

And this might not count but Ozma "Korobeiniki" originally the tetris theme song.

me first & the gimmie gimmies...they're fun, hillarious, clever...but not great...I'd say the same about richard cheese.

Personally I think:

Iron & wine's such great heights > postal service's (PS version is great, but doesn't give the vocals the deserved attention)
joe cocker's with a little help > beatles'
Townes van zandt's dead flowers > stone's

how about a list of artists that should be strung up by their private parts for the covers they did? my list:

britney spears - satisfaction
madonna - american pie
puff daddy - missing you
dixie chicks - landslide

oh, this list would get so, so long....

Metallica kicked the crap outa the original version of Turn the page..
Dylon sucked..

Does Eric Clapton's unplugged version of Layla count as a cover?

Let's see... Here's some more OBVIOUS ones:

Devo: (I can't get no) Satisfaction
Sid Vicious: My Way
Dread Zeppelin: Whole Lotta Love

Oh, and Stevie Ray Vaughm covered Stevie Wonder's Superstition, NOT the other way around...

Linda Eder's cover of "Man of La Mancha" - absolutely incredible!

on the plus side, now I wanna go listen to some of these covers/originals I haven't heard before just so I can disagree vehemently.

Cradle of Filth covered this song too. They did an ok job, but Iron Maiden's original is much better. I haven't heard Iced Earth's cover, but I don't like Iced Earth so I probably wouldn't like their cover.
You should give it a try anyway. It's a noticeably more modern sound... if you like that. I'm not into ACDC, Maiden, or Black Sabbath, etc. because it sounds too old school for my tastes. Blame it on newer technology ? Not sure...

Fixed that for you. Anyone who suggests Cocker's version is better than the original needs to have a baseball bat introduced to their medulla oblongata.
Well, that may be extreme, but come ON.

I say you're wrong. cocker's is better. even the most hardcore beatles fan I've ever met (one of those guys who has all 12 discs of let it be outtakes) has said cocker's is better.

you come ON.

Hm... I guess it all comes down to whether you think the vocals should be part of the song or the vocals should BE the song. Most of my Beatle fan friends agree with me, and I naturally deride and contemplate immolating the ones who don't

Are you for real?!?!?!?!?!

What about -

Kill 'em All
Ride the Lightning
Master of Puppets
...And Justice for All

There's aboutr 50 songs that KICK ASS. Master of Puppets was the first (and I believe only) Album to make itinto the top 10 with no Radio Air play.

No crap retard... but look at the last 12 years of thier career all crap... black/load/reload/st.anger
last decent album was Justice..
1/3 is a pretty generous ratio...
ever been to a metallica Concert?
ive been to 40... and guess what they play ALOT of cover tunes live as well..
In the past they usally open with SO What... or last Caress and usally have at least 2 other non metallica songs in each set...

And that was a compliment not a slam on metallica retards...
they are the words best cover band.. too bad they forgot how to write thier own good material..

Avril Lavigne's cover of Chop Suey of course!

seriously now, All Along the Watchtower by hendrix. I also quite liked Paint it Black by...Gob I think it was.....much more energetic than the Stones' original.

As the post is worded, it was a slam on the entire career of Metallica. Nowhere did you mention that their "recent" music sucks....just that they were the greatest cover band and 3/4 of their best songs were covers.

Their style of music has changed over the years. Metallica, Load, and Reload are awesome albums. St. Anger will never be known as a Lyrical Masterpiece, but I think it kicks ass.

Noo way Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here is much better.

My pick is Young Americans by The Cure (orig by David Bowie)

What does "Dylon" or Bob DYLAN, who I think you meant, have to do with the song "Turn the Page"??

That song was written and recorded by Bob Seger.

 I love that version. Original was just terrible.

Here are my contributions:
Smashing Pumpkins versions of Landslide (Fleetwood Mac) and You're all Ive Got Tonight (Cars)

Marilyn Manson has a cover of Lennon's Working Class Hero. Im pretty sure the music is exactly the same but Manson's voice is really cool in that song.

I was actually thinking about this about a week ago while driving home. I like it better when a band takes an original and just tweeks it just enough to make it better like in the Smashing Pumkins covers. Its sort of hard to really call something a cover when the 2 songs are totally different. Like All Along the Watchtower...Dylan and Hendrix's versions are totally different songs.

I had to read the whole thread to see if anyone else would mention this one, I think Smashing Pumpking version of this song is much better then the original.
